hi, thanks for all the replies,i have loaded win xp, i do have a windows 7 upgrade disc, and am able to upgrade 2 computers with it using the licence from work. the hard drive ive installed is 320gig so space isnt the problem. ive ran the checker for windows 7 and it ticks all the boxes, will i have to search for drivers for windows 7myself? or does this mean microsoft have them for me?

Windows 7. It runs just fine with 1GB RAM unlike Vista. It has a very large number of drivers so you should be OK.

Windows XP is a stinking pile of horse manure security wise. If you don't mind ending up with a virus ridden pile of manure then continue with XP. XP is like the sick kid at school who caught everything doing the rounds. Personally, I'd not want to be doing anything like online banking on XP. Also remember that it is now on end of life support from Microsoft only getting security updates for serious faults and that new software such as IE9/10 won't work on XP.

yes it does, but a vanilla install of 7 feels a touch slower than XP on 1GB

So, the millions of us who still use XP are riddled with every virus/trojan/etc. under the sun and we can't safely bank or do anything else online ??? Come on, get real.

...and as for IE9 not running on XP, I'd call that a distinct benefit ;):D

Probably, yes. All the 7 installs I've done have only required one or two drivers that weren't included in 7, Realtek audio was the main one, but easily remedied by a visit to realtek's website:)

1.Most netbooks are supplied with Win7 and 1gb RAM these days.

    2. The Atom n270 does run with Win 7, better with a RAM upgrade to 2gb which seams to be the limit for most netbooks,

    3. As I said in my original post......

Yes, they are supplied with Windows 7 Starter. Does the OP have a licence for Starter? I think he doesn't. The Netbook spec states 1GB RAM max. So he'll likely be installing a full version of Windows on that Netbook, according to your advice.

Clicking through my link and then to support will lead you to the appropriate website.

Let us know how Windows 7 Pro runs on it. Nothing wrong with trying 7...or even Windows 8 if you are game.

The most commonly compromised OS is XP. The most easily compromised OS is XP. It is so trivial to compromise XP that it is beyond funny.

You could have your computer rooted and not even know it.
