Your spec? If it has 1GB, I'd stick to XP....

I would stick to xp, windows 7 is bloated, 20gb in use before i even installed 1 single app. on xp less than 3gb hell the partition i used on my xp build was only 20gb. and even with all the software i installed i have over 10gb free.

If you've got a copy of Windows 7 use it, there's no point in using out of date software to save 15GB of drive space.

That would depend on the size of the drive inside. which he doesnt mention. could be anything from a 20gb-160gb drive or bigger dependent on his needs of course.
personally i would have replaced it with a 500gb depending on the price and of course it may not be a 2.5in but a 1.8in drive.

The OP saiys he's replaced the hdd, so as most hdd's are relatively large these days, its probable that the gb size of the hdd is not the limiting factor.

I would suggest use the latest OS that you have a legal copy of, as I believe Marms suggested, and I second for the same reasons as he gave with just one caveat: are the drivers available for the OS the OP would prefer to install?

If you dont work in the IT or computing industry, use Windows XP.

If you do work in the IT Computing industry, move to Windows 7 and then install XP in it as you can do that.

Windows 7 running on an ATOM N270 and 1GB of RAM? I'm sure that the OP doesn't have a 'legal' licence for Windows 7 Starter, so....

If it already has a licence/COA for XP, continue to use it.

It uses standard Intel and Realtek Drivers, so that won't be a limiting factor.

Not sure about the post above mine, whose suggestion is to try to run XP within Windows 7 Ultimate/Professional on that hardware. Has he actually tried it using a similar configuration?

I would doubt he has, however I have run XP under Virtualbox on Ubuntu with 2GB and it flies as in like a dodo

1.Most netbooks are supplied with Win7 and 1gb RAM these days.

    2. The Atom n270 does run with Win 7, better with a RAM upgrade to 2gb which seams to be the limit for most netbooks,

    3. As I said in my original post......
