Anna'a welsh Zoo

Manor House Wildlife Park, near Tenby - They charge full price for carers accompanying wheelchair users. Most places are at least learning that wheelchair users HAVE to have someone with them, and adjust their charges accordingly but the email I have received back from this zoo makes no allowances at all.

One party of 7 who will now not be visiting.
I don't know if I'm getting better or just used to the pain.

To be honest I don't visit places based on their disabled policy. I visit places I go to on the basis that there is probably something there I want to see.

Yes it's nice when these places reduce charges for the disabled/carers, but I don't see why this should be the norm.

And before you reply, just to let you know, when I'm on days out I too am a wheelchair user.
[SIZE=-1]To equate judgement and wisdom with occupation is at best . . . insulting.

Im with a party of 7, money is a huge issue so I tend to pick and choose where we go when we're on holiday. I like my kids to have a nice time even though my husband's complex needs mean neither he nor I can really take part in anything of the day, other than to see the kids enjoying themselves. There are thankfully now a lot of places understanding that a wheelchair user sometimes HAS to have someone with them - that person may not particularly want to go there but doesnt really have that choice. I think it is a very nice gesture to make if a company does offer it, and I like to let others know if they are particularly helpful. Likewise if somewhere is not, I like to let people know of that also :)

And all because the carer has to pay full price??

Don't tell me you are another one of the 'away day disabled can I get it cheaper' brigade.

How mean and petty can you be. What makes it right that you think businesses should reduce their fees just because you are pushing a wheelchair.

Maybe you also think that mum's or dad's even with young children should get a reduction because they are pushing a pram!

Talk about milking it for what its worth!!!

mums or dads dont pay for the child in the pram though because under 3s go free as theyre not able to make full use of the facilities so something similar should also apply to people in wheelchairs because they frequently cant make full use of the facilities & more often than not, these places dont even have anywhere suitable to change continence aids for anyone larger than a toddler yet theyre still expected to pay full price! besides which it would be discrimination for wheelchairbound people who are unable to self-propel because the only way theyd be able to gain access would be with a carer but that means two admission fees if theres no discount for either of them so they pay double the amount anyone else pays.

to the op: it may be their official policy but im almost positive theyve allowed carers in for free when ive queried it at the gate

DLA is to cover costs such as these. If you expect to get in for free you essentially getting the benefit twice. My husband has to go everywhere with me and the additional costs are met from the care element of my DLA.

I get the lowest level and that just covers someone to do my ironing and have my food delivered.

I wouldn't want more, cos that wouldn't be fair, so if what you say was the case then I wouldn't go anywhere that had entrance fees.

Companies offering to waive a carer's fee is nothing to do with the benefit - so no one is 'getting it twice'. If a company want to offer to waive a fee then that's their business. The National Trust do an 'access-for-all' card - permits one carer - they offered it, so I took it. Who wouldn't?

even on high rate, a whole weeks dla would barely cover the hourly rate of a carer for a full day out much less their entrance fees
  • Thanks for the replies - ignoring the obvious troll.
We get medium rate care which should by rights be higher rate but hubby is so wrecked by recent fraud investigations (of which he was totally cleared) and ESA transition that he insists he isnt up to any more 'form filling' or appealing decisons.

Hubby loves certain things - machinery for example - that I have no interest in at all but in order for him to go and see that kind of thing, I need to go with him. Just pees me off that in instances like that, carers who have to be there get charged full rate. Thats ignoring the other fact that many disabled and carers dont get to use facilities so why should they b e expected to pay full price. But I accept they are private companies out to make money so I simply vote with my feet and go to the places where I feel we're treated compassionately - Monkey World in Dorset is amazing for helping those with disabilities (and their carers), many could do with taking a leaf out of their book

Yes I am fully aware of that having grandchildren myself. I also know that it is very very rare that a wheelchair user has to pay the full price - in fact in most places they don't charge.

However this thread was about the carer not getting a reduction. Hence the reason why I pointed out that mum's & dad's pushing a pram still pay the full whack.

So what is it with the poster throwing his/her toys out of the pram because they, as the carer, couldn't get a discount!
As I have pointed out that if they start giving discounts to wheelchair 'pushers' then the same should apply tp those pushing prams!!
