Why do things in Cyprus or elsewhere that you wouldnt dream of doing in the UK?

Because too many of us leave our brains and common sense at the airport!

And it's not just the developers who mugged us all, it's the lawyers too! They're the people who we pay handsomely, to act on our behalf and in our interests!! Most of them are on the pay-roll of developers!!! So that's another point, never ever use a one-stop shop. And always refer to the FCO website for the country in question, as there should be a list of lawyers who have a honest track record. In the RoC that list is very short!

Most of this was before the days of great discussion forums like this, and also the expat discussion forums which now flourish in the most popular places abroad.

So anyone who blindly goes down that path now really hasn't got any excuses, and isn't that the reason why the OP sensibly asked the question?

I have just read the report and revealing comments in your link and my view is that both sides of Cyprus do not have credible legal system and that justice does not prevail.
Is the whole place run by the !!!!!?

Wow, I am not sure about the South, I am attracted to the North because of high intrest rates and I would not wish to live in the Euro zone. I'm sure that I read in a newspaper somewhere that a bank in the South were evicting some people because they had allowed a builder to take out a mortgage on the land, after the property had been built and paid for by the occupier. The builder, apparently had not paid the loan back and the bank forclosed on the loan. Crazy but I have heard that this is all so done in the North.

    Thanks for you comment

What you've written there is actually exactly what goes on in Northern Cyprus and Turkey!:money:
  • If you are interested in living in the TRNC I would suggest you rent first, get to grips with the way of life, the good, the bad and the ugly - in the form of estate agents and builders. Get to know about land titles and what they mean.

A lot of people have lost their money and homes through unscrupulous practice - something that IS just as prevalent in the south, Spain, Bulgaria etc etc - but there are estate agents that only deal with re-sale properties that have ALL their legit paperwork and FULL title.

From the previous posts anyone would think it was hell on earth, and the Turkish Cyps owned absolutely !!!!!! all, but this is far from the case. If you can take the time to do your own research and talk to people you can make an informed judgement rather than get the 'media perception' and endless 'what did we do?' diatribe that comes from the south.

I'm not starting a political argument, but there are 2 sides to every story, the TRNC is a beautiful place - it has it's fair share of problems, but who doesn't nowadays - but you need to do loads of 'on-the-ground' research.

Trying to take an estate agent/property developer to court outside of the EU - Northern Cyprus and Turkey for example - is nigh impossible. THAT'S why buying in those countries is so so so so risky! There's far more cases of unscrupulous and illegal dealings in Turkey and TRNC than there is in the EU!

The only way those dispossessed of land / buildings in North Cyprus can regain their property is to take it by force.

Turkey is the victor and Greece is the vanquished. Turkey enjoy the spoils of war and what is amazing is that the E.U. believe their laws apply in the North (google the Oram case).

Crazy absolutely crazy. A judgement passed in the UK and considered binding in a foreign country!!!

    h

And they do take it back by force - legal force. You obviously are out of date with the politics there. Hundreds of Brits in TRNC have been FORCED by the Courts to demolish their villas, as the land they're built on belongs to a Greek Cypriot in the south. Happens all the time..........

Absolute Tosh, as with Property purchases ANYWHERE, do your homework, Not all land in Cyprus as a whole is/was GC owned and a simple check with the Land registy office in Kyrenia and Nicosia (RoC) will reveal the truth, personally I love living here BUT If I were setting out again, I'd certainly rent for the 1st 6- 8 Months, live here through all different seasons, August when Its 50 Degrees with 90% Humidity And January when Its mostly raining and difficult to heat Houses essentially built for the Summer(Open Plan and Marble floors).

It's not absolute tosh at all! YOU have a vested interest in claiming 'a simple check with the Land registy office in Kyrenia and Nicosia (RoC) will reveal the truth' - you live out there!

If it was as easy and simple as that, then there wouldn't be hundreds of people who've lost their lifesavings on buying a property out there would there? They all believed the properties were legal and genuine - certification and documents SAID SO - as did the lawyers/estate agenets/property developers!

    Turned out they were false!

It may be true that some properties pre-1974 are built on land that was Turkish owned, but most of it wasn't! Pre-1974 most of it belonged to Greece, thus why most of the properties built in TRNC since 1974 are illegal.....
  • It shows what a load of con artists many Cypriot developers are.

They look for mug punters, mostly British and miraculously get them to buy homes off plans, hand over thousands for a house that they dont own and potentially could be repossessed by the bank who hold the needs as security for the loans that the builder took out to build it in the first place!

Why do things in Cyprus or elsewhere that you wouldnt dream of doing in the UK?

    It's even worse in Turkey!!!!!!!!:money:
