I'd be interested to hear what the supermarkets are charging when some of you folks go shopping at the weekend. I'm going to check L!dl's prices tomorrow.

I buy mine from a farm shop - organic and free range. Lovely and fresh with beautiful golden yokes. You can see the chickens running around.

£1-50 for a dozen Class 2 eggs. I had to ask what Class 2 and Class 1 meant. Apparently Class 1 (2.50 a dozen) is what the supermarkets insist on because they are all the same size, no speckles. Class 2 sizing is a bit more random, a few speckles and the odd feather for good luck:rotfl:

I Too buy Sainsbobs basic barn eggs and find them perfectly adequate for what I need at 1.89 for 18 its good value and as I use them mainly in cakes and on the odd occasion in scrambled or as last night one in a fry up I am quite happy with them My local butcher has a big notice outside now that apologises for the rise in the cost but as its the first rise in about 4 years I don't think its bad His XL free range are 1.40 for 6 or 2.50 a dozen Now and again I may buy half a dozen, but not often as I say the basic barn eggs are perfectly good enough for cakes and stuff.

Good news that action is being taken to improve the conditions of caged chickens and personally, I'd rather go without than buy eggs from caged hens.

Try looking on your local market and ask if they sell trays of oddments, I can buy a small of 15 ungraded free range eggs from the egg stall market for £1.25 - some are huge, some tiny or just a bit mis-shapen but they are just as good as the graded big ones and just as nice and fresh. :D

Also I'd spread the word - its amazing how many people do keep a few chooks in the back garden and are happy to sell their surplus. :)

I wish I had chickens. My OH got some of the best eggs from a friend of his. I felt sorry for the poor chickens when I saw the size of them! Every one was a double yolker.

I've bought woodland eggs from Sainsburys. The yolks were a lovely colour. Apparently the chickens get to roam around trees. I've been banned from buying anything other than free-range, ever since OH saw that Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's programme.

Iceland still have 6 free-range ones for £1.
