You get 18 large free-range eggs at Costco for about £2.80.

Never had a problem with eggs from Aldi myself.
  • Box of 6 free range eggs in Lidl - 86p. This has actually gone down from a couple of years ago. It has been at 86p for 6 free range eggs for a while now.

Oh my word - next time someone quibbles about the £6 sack of feed I buy in every three months to supplement the leftovers our totally non-organic-but-very-happy girls live on - oh, and two bales of barley straw a year at £3 each - I will be able to point out that we'd be spending well in excess of £2 a week on eggs otherwise - and there'd be no free fertiliser!

I know we're lucky to have the room to keep them, but we go through about 2 dozen eggs a week (averaging 7 teens/adults in household) so it really does make economic sense. That's £30 p.a. as opposed to £176.80, using the Lidls price.

You do very well, mine cost MuCH more than that to keep. I precautionary treat the housing once a year for redmite, get through considerably more bedding and feed. I also worm (either with verm x or with something with a withdrawl period) and run the incubator every now and then, electricity costs. Our food is also a lot more than £6 a large saxk through the agricultural feed merchants for the basic feed!

Keeping chickens is great, not many have enough land to rotate grazing areas properly to avoid worming and never need to treat or spend on jkeeping mites at bay.

I go to a local garden centre, bog standard large eggs at £1.20 (no idea if they're free range, as they don't say/I don't look). Else, it's Aldi's 10 for £1.

For those that buy Happy Eggs, the producers were subject to an investigation 2 years ago.

The ASDA SmartPrice (sorry chickens, but times are hard, money is short and charity begins at home) 15 pack I usually buy have gone up from £1.25 (8.33p each) to £1.58 (10.53p each). That's 26.4%.

Sainsbury's Basic 18 packs are also now £1.89 (10.50p each).

However, at the time of writing on their website, Tesco Value 15's are still £1.25 (8.33p each). I haven't been able to verify this price in a store yet, though.

I've also noticed more nearly out of date eggs on the bargain shelf in ASDA. Older eggs are still good for hard boiling and pickling.
The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life. :)
  • I get the "Farm Pride" free range eggs from Mr T, 89p for 6.
