Another winning bid cancelled

Trouble is, I suppose there HAS to be a way to cancel the bids and close the auction at the last minute for those exceedingly rare times when the seller is just wrapping up that priceless Ming vase and drops it on the floor. It's this that people tend to abuse.
If eBay was happy to relinquish a tiny bit of their profit and allow reserves to be set for free, you'd see 99% of examples of this practice stop overnight. I can't see that happening, though.
eBay doesn't let me end any items within the last 12 hours, so it'd appear they've closed the loophole.0 -
to get round the reserve problem i just get a mate to bid up what I would want the reserve to be. There is a chance he/she will win but at least i don't lose the item for too small amount of money!
Erm... this is against Ebay policy too...
Shill bidding is when sellers—or someone they know—place a bid on their item to drive the price up. This is called artificial bidding. Often the people placing bids have certain information about the seller's item that other shoppers aren't aware of. To make sure no one gets an unfair advantage, shill bidding is prohibited on eBay.
People who know the seller – such as family members, flatmates, or employees – can't bid on that seller's items, but they can use options like Buy It Now that don't involve bidding. Sellers with employees have to make sure their staff are aware of this policy and what the consequences are for breaking the rules.0 -

Well of course its against Ebay policy as they want you to pay extra to get the reserve price listing. However if they don't know this is what i've done they aren't going to do anything about it!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. So basically you cheat. Nice.
Just the kind of seller we all want to avoid on ebay.Living on Earth can be expensive, but it does include an annual free trip around the Sun.0 -

And if there was ever a company that deserved to be cheated, it would be fleabay. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

No i don't cheat, I just refuse to pay extra to set a reserve price on my bid. There is no difference to doing this than there is setting a reserve price.
I am happy as I have got the price I wanted, the buyer is happy as they have got the item for a price they have bid on. The only people unhappy are Ebay who have not made extra money by me setting a reserve limit.

Each to their own but as a seller and buyer on ebay my take is that if you don't want to abide by the sites rules don't use it to sell your stuff. Also shill bidding is a pain. If somebody wants a minimum amount for their item I want an idea before wasting any time watching or bidding on it as there may be something similiar finishing earlier which is genuinely up for the starting price listed.
I'd deliberately avoid a seller I knew was doing this frankly.Living on Earth can be expensive, but it does include an annual free trip around the Sun.0 -

Fair enough. However I have never had any complaints and have 100% positive feedback therefore I will continue on my merry way! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

The buyer is bidding against a fake bidder - so the buyer is the loser.
Also - its illegal and a jailable offence.0
