If you know the program or process that is requesting this access (like a third-party software to manage your HOSTS file), you should disable the security option from Avira before use the software. Go to Avira Configuration (Configure Avira...)> tick "Expert Mode" > General > Security > uncheck "Protect Windows hosts files from changes" under System protection > Click Apply, then OK. You should be able to manage your HOSTS file now. Then, you could check this option again later.

Open the file hosts with notepad.

It should look like this if it was successful.

    OK.

Now I am a tad confused. (Not difficult these days, I admit)

I did that and opened the file with notepad and it looked similar to the one shown on that link.............

    Now what? Is that it?

Does this require a reboot. What difference/benefit am I likely to see?

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.

    Yes, that's it.

    No.

Basically it blocks content from bad sites & ad servers. It's explained in greater detail in the first link I gave you but basically it's set & forget. It is updated from time to time, you can check the site once a month or so.

    Whilst I remember....

Go to start > run and copy/paste into the run command box:

    firefox.exe about:config

    click ok

When firefox opens (click yes, I'll be careful!), in the filter box copy/paste each of these in turn:

    browser.search.defaulturl
    browser.startup.homepage

    keyword.URL

Right click each entry in turn and choose reset.

In order, what you are removing are these values:
