WPA2 is hard to break and is standard on most new routers. Unfortunately so is WPS and many default router configurations have this enabled and it is breakable in a few hours. How many people care to update the firmware on their routers once they are set up to fix such vunerabilities or disable default features?

So yeah, holding the account holder of an IP when it doesn't come close to identifying who did what on the connection is a stupid idea. Its not like someone can borrow your car without you knowing who it was and if its stolen you will notice pretty quickly and notify the relevant authorities. Will you notice if someone exploits the WPS vunerability or even notice if someone in the household is uploading things the copyright holder doesn't want them to distribute? I'd say that would be less certain so car analogy is a bit weak.

If you use a secure pass phrase and WPA2 encryption on your router it is next to impossible to break
Google WPS hack - under 10 hours to get in if you have WPS enabled (and you can't disable it on some router).

  • I know they can see all the data sent aand recieved!! But like i said.. my PC change IP everytime i reboot so only way to trace me to home address is the routor!!! All wireless can be hacked.
If NASA computers are possible to be hack then anything can... and soon their will be a software to stop BT tracing or seeing what you are downloading.. Hackers always one step ahead.

Also how they going to get you for copyright software... easy to obtain keygen and use it to get full verson. small file can BT trace that

BT suppose to of block newzbin 2!! A friend that uses it was gutted then i google it for him to get round it and was simple by adding one letter to the address. So all the pedo site prob got a way round too. These people need shooting
I dont think BT will act strong on download copy rights!!! unless some doing it all the time and selling them.....

So instead of tackling the likes of isohunt, where they've being thoroughly humiliated in their efforts, they're going to go after the children that are using it. Wrong end of the shovel?

Which is what the Digital Millennium Copyright Act needs - they go after the person who is named on the bill for the ISP.

If you pay the bill and someone else has piggybacked onto your broadband to download movies, then tough luck!

At the risk of being pedantic, doesn't your PC keep the same IP address when you reboot?
It was my understanding that only the router changed IP when it was rebooted.

I'm pretty sure the issue is uploading content, not downloading it (most filesharing involves uploading). Best way to be safe is use decent router security, I have a decent WPA2 passphrase and MAC filtering on mine and feel pretty secure.
Then again, I also pay for stuff, so don't need to worry too much

It doesn't matter how many times you reboot your PC, your router is connected to the to the network using your phone line and whatever IP address is allocated to you.

All of this is logged along with a lot of other stuff about you and what you are doing.

At the moment your ISP doesn't really care what you are doing as long as you pay the bill so this information isn't used to point the finger but it's there and they can do it.

The anti piracy people know this and this is why they are pushing for laws forcing the ISPs to use that information to point the finger and then cut people off if they break the law.

If you think hiding behind a router and re-booting regularly is protecting you and making you invisible then you're sadly mistaken and very naive.

I found this out when hosting games that people have to keep asking for the new IP address to connect to me if im hosting!

If I am hosting I'd never ever let people know my actual IP address, I mean this is asking for trouble!!

Use a VPN like Tunngle or Hamachi...

Would you mind reposting this in English please. I haven't got a clue what you are talking about.
