If some hacker is downloading via my router!!! how am i suppose to know he (or next door) hack into my router.. so if they hack into my routor and start downloading movies to their own laptop i get the letter!!! stupid.. i once download music from pirate bay via a pub free wi-fi!!! can any one explain how this work.. I agree they should stop it i buy the dvds now it cheap as chips.. or love film cheaper so no longer do this but worried what if the above happen... i wont have proof..

Can you try revising your OP please? It is difficult to work out what you're really trying to say. Certainly what you've written doesn't seem to tally with the thread title - did you mean to post any links to news articles about the subject?
  • didnt want to post link not sure if allowed.

But BT & talk talk lost appeel!!! so now if anyone is caught downloading movies or film you will be warn but letter> If ignore you will be cut off.

What im saying how do i know no one is downloading via my routor Eg: next door could hack into routor and downloads movie... i the one that will get the letter as it will get trace to the routor IP address

I'd imagine the safest route would be to secure your router to avoid such a situation.
  • Well I imagine it will work a bit like motoring offenses.
With motoring, the owner is liable for speeding offenses unless they provide the name of the driver at the time.
So how about the owner of the telephone line/router will be liable unless they can prove otherwise.
As regard Wifi security I guess it will again be a bit like having your car stolen while you left the keys in the ignition. Your insurance company will not pay in this example as you did not take sufficient care - which acts as an "incentive" to ensure your car is always secured. ie ensure your wi-fi is secure.

All IP addresses are traceble to a home address at the time they were being used. I have no idea how long ISP's keep the data on which home address was connected to which IP address over what period of time (ie until a router re-boot)

Please install and use a spell checker. One single exclamation point is sufficient at the end of a sentence Also use the shift key every now and again. Your post is very difficult to read.

First make sure your router is password protected not the admin/admin default . This will stop someone else using your Router. Write the password down somewhere.

As you are with BT your wireless connection security should already be set to WPA-PSK using the key code that came on a credit card sized piece of plastic that came with your router. Also written on the back of the home hub. To check (for Home hub 2) click on http://bthomehub.home/ then choose settings, then enter your router password and finally click wireless.

I'm not sure what happens to BT FON (I've got mine set as Not Acive as I need all the bandwidth I can get.

Are you sure about having a new IP adress on each reboot? Even if you do BT (by law) will still hold a record that matches your postal address, your IP address and the time/date of change.

If you do get a WARNING letter then that is the time to make a big fuss to BT about being hacked!

You are correct you are quite safe downloading in the pub using free Wi-Fi.

Finally I'll post the link to the BBC news article

    Hope this helps,

    Dave
  • Yes your PC does chanage IP every reboot!! Routor does not. I found this out when hosting games that people have to keep asking for the new IP address to connect to me if im hosting! So they cant track your PC even if they could only one bit of hardware change or clean install of windows will change it.
They can trace the routor to your home address! They can't use Computer IP as i said above.

I do change password 2 times a year but it only make it harder for them to hack in. I would of assume that their is a way of telling if someone on your line. But if they had a brain they use it when your at work or out.!!!!!

If you use a secure pass phrase and WPA2 encryption on your router it is next to impossible to break so I don't think this is a real issue to be honest.

Disagree. If you like to download from 'other' sources, having open wifi / easily hackable password would be good mitigating circumstances! They'd need your mac address, which can be easily changed, to have any sort of link.

Of course they can trace your IP address, they have log files of what IP Address was allocated to you at any given time. Your IP is like the number on your house, it's how your data finds its way to you.

You could use a proxy to hide your IP but there is always a connection back to you, how else would the data know where to go. Using a proxy relies on the proxy supplier not handing your details over to the authorities, or anyone else, if asked.

Then there's packet sniffing. Your ISP can install these on their servers and use it to look at the data to see if you're downloading copyright material. That's why people encrypt emails with stuff like PGP and why in countries like France encryption is, or was, illegal so big brother can peek at your data and see what you're doing if it wants.

The reason most illegal downloaders don't get caught isn't because they can't catch you, it's because they don't generally bother to look through the *HUGE* amounts of data they have on what we do and the data we're receiving.

If your router is being hacked it's down to you to secure it. Do you really think they'll shrug their shoulders and go away when you respond to any letter with "Wasn't me guv, someone must've hacked me router."

The only secure way is to use free Wi-Fi hotspots and those only give limited bandwidth to each user so are virtually useless for any major downloads.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.

So you would be happy to have the police come knocking at your door and arresting you, because your internet access was used to download pedo material.

Would be one thing to be arrested for copyright infringement as no one would bat an eyelid, but for pedo material. As they say mud sticks.
