TU series petrol engine by any chance? These common lost their head gasket on the front left hand side of the engine as you look inside the bonnet (if I remmber correctly), something like this, there should be a picture below:

Look for oil seeping between the block and the cyclinder head on and near the corner. Have a look inside the cooling water bottle and in the radiator if it has a cap, if oil has found it's way into the water system it should be floating on the top (make sure the car is cold first).

I looked in the coolant bottle and the water does look dark. But it has been like that ever since I got the car over 2 years ago.

The oil leak is on the left hand side.
  • OK so it does sound like the usual head gasket issue, with my TU engine I dipped some kitchen towel into the water tank and pulled it out and could see clearly that there was oil on it - give this a try. Can you see the picture I posted (I don't think I attached it correctly), are you still using the car? I can see a new gasket coming your way.
  • I'll trying dipping some paper towel in and take a closer look. Still using the car every day and working fine. Oil level hasn't dropped any from the fill up I did last week.

Not a hard or expensive job to change out the coolant, could be worth some DIY to help you diagnose your oil issue.

Remember, empty from the lowest point, refill only when the engine is COLD. Peugeot use special hose clips that require a special tool (to discourage home mechanics and increase aftersales), just cut/break them off and replace with jubilee clips.

I checked again under the bonnet this morning while out changing a tyre with a slow puncture. It is oily in the same place as on the picture.
