Pug 206 Oil Leak

I've got an oil leak on my petrol Pug 206. The level indicator that flashes up were the mileage is when you start the car has dropped 3 bars out of 5.

Took a look under the front of the car and there seems to be a huge oily damp area on the drivers side below the belt. Rest of the engine bay looks pretty clean from under the bonnet.

I took the oil cap off and there is a tiny tiny bit of white and a smudge of yellowish. The rest of the oil in the top of the engine looks clean.

Does this sound serious or a cheap fix?

I'm popping it into the local indie garage tomorrow.

A mayonaise type fluid on the cap is sometimes a sign that your cylinder head has failed. That's a significant repair if it's on it's way out.

You are clearly losing oil and by the sounds of it at a rate, so it need checking.

    "your cylinder head has failed"

Or in mechanics speak, your head gaskets gone, and yes expensive.

The a tiny tiny bit of white and a smudge of yellowish was only on the cap. And I mean just a dot.

Anyway, my wallet will get lighter. :(

If it's only a bit, then it's probably more to do with the weather and shortish journey's, a partially blocked breather hose (look for medium/large hoses clipped to the rocker cover), or could even the filler cap at fault (it's designed to release pressure).
You should check those out, because increased crankcase/head pressure can cause a HG failure.

Oil leak sounds like it's coming from the cambelt side and you really should get that cambelt cover opened up and make sure it (the cambelt) isn't contaminated with oil.

Finally though. oil has a habit of migrating all over the place, so it might not even be anything serious..... But it's always better to be safe.

Don't know if the 206 is similar type engine to a 306

On one of my sons petrol 306's he had a severe oil leak from the belt end of the engine, traced it to behind the power steering pump. There is a rubber O ring that is part of the headgasket, it takes oil under pressure from the block up to the cylinder head,
    Needed a new headgasket

Thank god your not my mechanic

a tiny bit of white stuff is normally short journeys in cold weather !

loads of white stuff is normally head gasket

    don't assume the worst everytime

the oil leak may be the bottom crankshaft pulley oil seal gone awol

wife's 206 blew the bottom pulley not the oil seal and it was £325 to replace

Be CAREFUL in case your told head gasket AND oil seal etc.

sometimes main dealer are better to diagnose the problem only ;)

Thanks all. Depending on what the garage say, I'll take it to another trusted garage for a second opinion.

An engine steam clean or pressure wash might make the diagnosis easier, might be cheaper to outsource this ,at local car wash, rather than garage.
