An engine steam clean or pressure wash might make the diagnosis easier, might be cheaper to outsource this ,at local car wash, rather than garage.

    UPDATE:

I took it to a garage this afternoon, they put it up the ramp and had a look.

They basically said to just keep topping it up with oil as it could be anything. From a cheap fix of £120 (something to do with the sump) to £350+ if it turns out to be something major (gasket).

Had a feeling he didn't want the work!

they sound inept and only want simple oil and filter jobs

A mayonaise type fluid on the cap is sometimes a sign that your cylinder head has failed. That's a significant repair if it's on it's way out.

You are clearly losing oil and by the sounds of it at a rate, so it need checking.
depends on what the cars is used for, only short trips will show some light mayo in the filler cap this is condensation if you run your car longer there would be no mayo unless headgasket or cracked block/head.

I usually to 4.5 miles to work. Plus other driving about so plenty of short journeys.

I've topped the oil up this evening with 2 litres which means it has lost 2 litres since November time.

    Then that'd explain the mayo.....

2 litres is quite a lot of oil though.
I forgot to ask what oil your using, if it's too low viscosity, it'll leak that much faster.

10W40 this because last time I had an oil and filter change this was what the garage used according to the receipt.

10w40 is a sort of safe average, I was hoping you'd say 0w40, because years ago people were ramming that stuff into their cars, thinking it'd improve performance and even now, people still spout this non-sense idea.... In much the same way that people say Mercs are good quality cars (pre-1990's they were) and that VW's are bomb proof (a reputation no longer deserved).

    I don't understand....?

^^ It means I don't think the oil viscosity is a problem for you, if you'd been using lower viscosity oil then I would have suggested moving to 10w40 or 15e40.
