New tyres

I went to Kwik fit today to have the brakes checked. Everything ok there. Then the helpful guy said the two front tyres are bald on the outside. No problem he said we can fit new ones for you today.

However I thought not so fast buddie and I said to him I would be in touch. When I got home I checked on the internet and they were the cheapest provided I arranged online and paid upfront I was saving about £30 compared to what the guy quoted me at the centre.

I then rang him to advise what I had done and by the tone of his voice he was not very impressed.

The moral of the story is never just agree to any additional work until you have investigated thoroughly.

Have you checked if the tyres actually need replacing? Kwik Fit are hardly known for their honesty in this regard!

However, if they do need replacing worth checking first if they are underinflated, as this is the most likely reason why they have worn unevenly. Apart from being dangerous, it costs you money in extra fuel & tyre wear!

I think that you will find that the general consensus on this site is not to use Kwik Fit or Halfords type chains. A good local independent will 9/10 offer a much better service. I would therefore state that mine and Tuckers comments on this thread ARE the most helpful as they will hopefully prevent anyone who is thinking that because they have a half price voucher that they will be only paying half price for whatever product or service they originally drive down there to get before leaving with new tyres all round, pads, disks and an exhaust system all on the back of a free winter battery check etc.

As you quoted in your post that they originally tried to over charge you by £30 it seems strange that you would want to defend them. I would state that a good independent would have just quoted you the price and not need you to go home and do and internet search to make sure you have the best price and then having to drive back there and negotiate. Do you see the predicament your original post is now putting you in.
