The mot requirement is that the middle 75% or 3/4s has a dread depth of 1.6mm minimum in the major grooves for the circumference of the tyre, if the balding bit is not thread bare or even better still has some tread marks on it and isn't within this region then don't panic. However, it will be worth getting your wheel tracking looked at a tyre shop with a full computer allignment set-up that can measure camber. Also, ask wherever you go, to have a look at your suspension bushes as they can contribute if they are worn and can give wear to one edge (somethimes creates a step like bald area)0
