I haven't been on the 'net yet; what AV would you recommend? Should I use Windows to download it to an SD card as I don't want to be exposed downloading on Linux.
Don't really use it enough to warrant using anti-virus, but this link leads to more info.
I wouldn't worry myself unnecessarily about getting infected whilst downloading the solution.0 -
As the ubuntu tree is very frequently updated then get on the "net" and allow it to update. Unlike Windows OOB attacks et cetera you won't be vulnerable as soon as you connect.
Linux is not (in my opinion still not after 10 years of me using it and writing code for drivers et cetera for various distro's) ready for mainstream, because of its lack of innovative help. If you are mildly technically savvy then it's ok, but it's not a Windows replacement.

Don't worry you don't have to learn code and there are plenty of helpful mse's here if you get stuck. I've been using Ubuntu for years and there are derivatives that with a click can be made to look like XP or Windows 7 - free download edition here. clicky
The producers of the distro are a charity that sends computers to Africa etc.Peel back your baby's eyelid to find no nationality or religious identity mark there. Peer at your baby's eyes for them to reflect back just people-throw away your flags and religious symbols...0 -

During my trial of Ubuntu I found these help pages invaluable and also the absolute beginner forum. Of course Google is your friend where you typically search for Ununtu xx.xx yyyy" where x.xx is the version of Ubuntu (10.10 or 11.10) and yyyy is your problem.
Your first job is to get Firefox (already installed in Ubuntu) connected to the internet to save swapping to windows.

You don't need the '3' console. Clicking on the connection icon may give you the option to choose Mobile Broadband and then to add the '3' connection settings.0
