If you want to install Ubuntu from within Windows, and want to avoid the hassle of partitioning your drive then look into Wubi. It installs as a special file on your normal Windows drive, and when you boot your PC it will give you the choice of Windows or Ubuntu. If you ever want to remove it, boot into Windows and you can uninstall it like a normal windows application.0 -
IIRC, a live Linux CD will let you play with the operating system, but it won't allow you to save any of the Linux settings as CDs are read-only and a bit slow.
Installing from USB (if you can do it) lets you save the Linux settings to the pen drive- and it's quicker.
Look here If you already have Windows, then you can dual boot into either Ubuntu or windows.

Did you begin from this point?
What I really don't understand is what is the point of transferring that image thingy on to a CD? Why can't you just run it from the hard drive?0 -

If you install Daemon Tools Lite
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/products/dtLite
and mount the .ISO as a virtual drive, you can. It will come up as a Virtual CD Drive within My Computer. You're spelling is effecting me so much. Im trying not to be phased by it but your all making me loose my mind on mass!! My head is loosing it's hair. I'm going to take myself off the electoral role like I should of done ages ago and move to the Caribean. I already brought my plane ticket, all be it a refundable 1.0 -
before you wipe windows, get the version of windows and the product key, just in case you want to reinstall it again.
Personally I'd use clonezilla and clone the whole hdd to a usb drive.
Also rather than wiping out windows, I would use the free VirtualBox and put ubuntu onto that, just to test it out. If you are happy with ubuntu, only then make it permanent.
For me the problem with non windows o/s are software drivers and utilities etc. that come with products as often they only are available for windows.0 -

You don't have to transfer it to a CD. You have just made a mistake along the way.
You just download and run the WUBI installer and follow the instructions on the page to which I have linked.
Then after you reboot, Ubuntu will be listed as a choice on boot up. e.g.0 -

Thanks, that was quite easy and I'm running Linux . But where are the instructions? I've spent about 25 mins on it without coming across even a help menu. I haven't been on the 'net yet; what AV would you recommend? Should I use Windows to download it to an SD card as I don't want to be exposed downloading on Linux.0
