Yes, you may need to go into the BIOS and set it to boot from USB......0

Installing Ubuntu is definitely a good move, but might be worth searching a couple of Ubuntu/Linux forums for any known issues with this model of laptop. It's sometimes a bit of a faff getting all the correct drivers and screen brightness/volume controls etc working. Forewarned is forearmed and all that0

Good for other distros, but you don't need it with Ubuntu. There's a tool built-in to the LiveCD specifically for that purpose.0 -
To test out if your machine is good with Ubuntu then with a live cd/usb - run a live session first. Audio, camera, display, internet, bluetooth, etc, should all work straight away. If they do not, then do research in ubuntuforums and decide on actions. If wireless does not seem to be recognised then ensure the machine wireless switch (if it exists) is enabled as on. In some cases, an ethernet cable is used for library down load 'additional drivers' before some wireless can be used. All is improving a lot in recent years.0

I tried installing Ubuntu from within Windows, but got stuck with this. It's an Asus Eee netbook running XP Home.

That's an image file. You have to burn that file to a CD using Nero for example. Then run the CD and the Ubuntu installation will start automatically.0
