Barclaycard - Cash-Like Transactions

So he was using a credit card to gamble. Barclaycard charged you as per the T&Cs and you are unhappy?
Really do need help to see how that works.0 -

The issue was more the fact they had charged for transactions which took place before the new T&Cs came into force. Without having to justify this he has used online betting sites for several years, he does not smoke/spend hours in the pub/spend all our money etc, so an odd bet should not meet with such judgement from a total stranger :eek:0 -

I couldn't agree more, it's pretty rude of you to be so judgemental Melbel.
I too was hit by these transactions; I probably have a bet on the horses about twice a year and had always used my Barclaycard to top up on the mobile betting website. Upon checking my statements I discover that they have now started charging me interest on these payments, even though I pay off my balance in full every month! Pretty annoyed about that, the change should have been spelt out clearly, not buried in a load of T&C amendments.0 -

Bit pointless you resurrecting this ancient thread, but anyway. They were spelt out clearly, Barclaycard made them very public on their website, with statements and individual mailings to cardholders.0 -
Barclaycard Balances and Payments (Condition 3.1)
Previously Cash-Like Transactions and Gaming Transactions were treated as Purchases. These Transactions will now be treated as Cash and we'll charge a Transaction Fee and interest at the Cash Rate.
For clarity:-
Cash-Like Transactions include the sending of money orders or wire transfers.
Gaming Transactions include gambling, betting and other transactions relating to gaming, such as the purchases of lottery tickets or gaming chips or purchases made at gambling establishments or on websites.
From the above I would say that those payments to utilities, council tax, and charities are still safe. But they are extending gambling to include the lottery and also including money transfers such as Western Union.
There is a MCC for other financial institutions e.g. if you pay your credit card bill with another credit card. Many of these are under the MCC of 6012.
There is also a MCC for Quasi Cash - This includes merchants that sell you foreign currency.
I suspect they might be included as cash now.0 -
If gambling is attracting cash fees, does that mean I could deposit say £50 into Betfair and then withdraw it in £5/10 chunks, whatever the minimum is, and get the transaction fee refunded?
I believe that was a big 'earner' quite a few years ago, so a lot of cards then stopped charging the fee for gambling to prevent that situation - and only charged the interest. But I was too young to have a card while those antics were going on!
From reading the first post, it seems Barclaycard will charge both? I have a Barclaycard, but never used it for gambling.0 -
