    Dear Mr ic

    Thank you for your -email.

I would like to confimr that all gambling and Pay Pal transactions will be
treated as cash and so you'll be charged a single transaction fee of 2.99%
    (there is no minimum charge)
    .

I trust this information is of assistance.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind Regards

    Francis Gomes
    Customer Advisor
    Barclaycard Customer Service Team

The bit in bold is strange considering it contradicts the new terms & conditions they sent out the other day:
Condition 8.2: Our fees have been simplified. Any cash withdrawals, Cash-Like Transactions, Gaming Transactions and non-sterling purchases will have a single fee of 2.99% (minimum £2.99). The minimum Transaction Fee will not be charged on Gaming Transactions and non sterling purchases. If you make a cash withdrawal in a non-sterling currency you'll just pay one Transaction Fee, rather than the two different fees as would be payable now.

Not good :( I can use another card for now, but I guess others will follow.

I expect the Barclaycard staff don't have a clue and are just making stuff up. I doubt that PayPal would be happy about retail purchases via them attracting cash advance charges from people's credit card companies.

This is an interesting T&C change - I wonder what's prompted it.

Lets hope other card companies follow suit.

As it is, this could mean that it will be better to use my Barclaycard (ex Egg Money) overseas rather than a f/x free card which charges interest..

Just need to check what the f/x loading is on Barclaycards...

    Regards
    Sunil

The fee is 2.99% which I expect would be more than you were charged in interest by Halifax if you took money out on the Clarity card.

Just got off the phone from the relationship manager after logging a complaint for getting all sorts of different answers. she was able to confirm that Paypal transactions are not considered as cash-like payments. what is basically changing is the way they will charge from may. people using cash like payments-for example withdrawing cash abroad, buying cash using your card will now only pay this 2.99 %instead of 2.75% but no any other fee on top of that. all purchases made within the uk-paid by pay pal, amazon etc are staying under purchases and won't be treated as cash like payments. so those who uses their cards to withdraw cash will benefit from these changes.

    Hi

I had the same email and have just called Customer (dis)Services to clarify - I was categorically told twice as of 28th May 2012 Barclaycard will consider a PayPal transaction as cash-like as it was and I quote, "costing Barclaycard too much money" to use the service.

Seems like Barclaycard can't make their minds up as to what to tell customers!

Seems like customer advisors are totally not prepared to receive this kind of questions and for that reason i logged the complaint and then was put through to the manager. got her name and requested a confirmation in writing of what she said. also what she told me was that the other online/over the phone payments like for flights(if purchased in other currency) were always subject to that 2.75% but it was already included in a exchange rate so from now on it will be 2.99% instead.
i hope she was right about paypal .

  • My main concern is Justgiving and other donation sites. I make quite a few donations with my card, does this count as a cash transaction now? Will try and get an answer if no one has already.

    I got it too.

Capital one have been doing this for a while. I used to transfer money to my paypal top-up card, and it was classed as a purchase.

But suddenly is was beeing charged a £7.50 fee - so i stopped.

They are constantly look for ways to charge more.

'Buy' something from a family member by paying money to their Paypal account, when paying mark it as goods, then send it to your own Paypal account as a gift. It's a cash advance up to 56 days interest free (Paypal will charge, think around 4%, for the initial 'purchase')

I'm guessing the confusion is about buying something ie making a purchase from ebay & paying via paypal, which should not attract any fees.

OR adding cash to your paypal account from your card which is entirely different to making a purchase & would probably attract the above fee.
