What about Garnethill? I know someone who lives there - it's walking distance to Kelvingrove and city centre, and I've always felt pretty safe walking around there (although haven't been there at night for a few years).

Garnethill is OK, but I don't think the prices are much cheaper than the West End, and I would definitely prefer the latter.
The bars and the resturants are a lot nicer than sauchiehall street, plus a lot less drunkern students running riot @ 3am!:rotfl:

Wrong, you get what you pay for - it's expensive because it's so high in demand - fantastic sports amenities, brilliant parks, the only Waitrose in the city centre, it's on the tube line and major bus routes, great cinema, the best bars and restaurants. The southern side of the West end is in fact walking distance to the city.

It's not on the "Tube line" as the tube is in London. It's the underground or the subway.

OP, lovely flat in Shawlands (south side)

Or one in Hyndland, a nice part of the West End

    Partick..... (west end)

I'd say these flats are good benchmarks of what you can get for your cash in decent areas of glasgow, if you pay more, you will get better and obviously less = worse

BigAunty is right, you get what you pay for. If you can afford it, please don't scrimp, or you will regret it.

People call it many things, including the "tube"

one of my friends who was outpriced for the West End settled on Broomhill and highly recommends it.
Broomhill is lovely, but is it really that much cheaper than the "proper" West End?

Scotsotun / Whiteinch are not as nice, but I think they would be a lot cheaper....

PS looking at the prices of flats in Broomhill and just noticed this place, check out the lovely colour choices in pic 5 !

Yeah, I think the OP ought to provide us with details on their rental budget as their council tax budget seems a bit optimistic. No use us flagging up Shawlands or Partick accommodation for a Govanhill or Ibrox budget.

Partick can be hit or miss, a couple of years ago I chased a junkie from Havelock St at Byres road to Fordyce St who was impersonating a policeman and trying to rip of students. I stopped chasing him then as I am not daft enough to chase a Partick boy into Partick on my own.

Partick isn't as nice as Byres Road/ Hyndland, but it's 5 minutes walk away, a bit cheaper and it's definitely getting better. A few nice bars and restaurants opened there recently.

I dunno, I call it a mix of tube / underground / subway, I don't think anyone has ever given me a dirty look or shot me down for calling it the tube :p
