I live in Glasgow and as you would expect, properties in the lower bands can be in areas that aren't the best.

Personally I would definitely steer clear of anything in "A", and proceed with caution in regards to properties in "B".

Glasgow is a big city, and like most big cities, it has it's bad (and some are very bad!) bits and it's good bits.

Your post is quite vague. Why are you moving to Glasgow? Will you be alone, or with family / children? Will you be renting or buying? What's your budget?

Basic bit of advice would be, avoid the east end if you can (this is the cheapest, but it's the cheapest for good reasons), the west end is the nicest (but can also be v expensive), and parts of the south side are nice too (but other parts aren't so nice).

I've lived here all of my life, so feel free to ask me questions :j

I would be moving for work, If I get a job ofc
council tax band A is usually for one bed and band B is usually for 2 beds, nothing to do with area really lol

I would be alone so no kids or anything like that, just a dog but that does influence where I would like to live as it would be important to me there was somewhere to go nice walks and feel safe, especially at night time walks.

the west end does seem far to expensive for what you get
im really looking for somethin within walkind distance to town centre, nice walks dor the dog and safe. I would like more specific street names etc that are nice to live rather than north south east or west becase that covers quite alot of ground

Not the case in Glasgow I'm afraid. Obviously a larger place will have a higher council tax band, but the area (ie relecting on the value of the property), has a very high impact on your council tax band, so please get this idea of 1 bed = A, 2 bed = B, out of your head.

A 3 bed place in Easterhouse (prob one of the worse parts of glasgow), will prob be a band A, but a 1 bed in the trendy area of the west end could be a band E

I'm afraid when it comes to most areas that are within walking distance (1-2 miles) of the city centre, I wouldn't be walking about myself at night (Gorbals, Dennistoun, Royston, Calton).

The West End is the only real area that offers this luxury I'm afraid (Kelvinbridge, Hillhead, Partick, Yorkhill), and there is also a really lovely park for dog walking (Kelvingrove)

If you want somewhere that is safe but with good amenities / nightlife and close to the city centre, I would re consider the West End TBH. You can prob get a 1 bed place from about £500 pcm.

If this is outwith your budget then maybe look at maybe Whiteinch or Scotstoun. These are in the West "Side" of the city, but not considered the West "End". They are about 3 miles further out than the areas in the west that I have just mentioned, but there is a lovely park nearby (Victoria Park), the bus routes are fantastic, but they are slightly more affordable.

Others may be able to provide info on nicer parts of the Southside that maybe slightly cheaper than the West End, I'm not too clued up on that area I'm afraid. i know Shawlands is nice, again ti has a nice park, good restaurants and bars, but I'm not too sure about the rental prices.

I don't know how far out of town you are prepared to go, but you might want to look for instance at Newton Mearns eg. http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/find.html?locationIdentifier=OUTCODE%5E969&insId=2&index=30

About 20 mins to town on the train (1/2 hourly service)

Depends what you are looking for though, not a lot of young single people in the Mearns, more families and older couples.

N Mearns is a lovely place, but I wouldn't really reccommend it to a young person wanting to live near the city centre

What about Garnethill? I know someone who lives there - it's walking distance to Kelvingrove and city centre, and I've always felt pretty safe walking around there (although haven't been there at night for a few years).

Garnethill is Woodlands' scuzzy neigbour now.

Glasgow has loads of parks so you are spoilt.

In the southside, my favourite areas are Shawlands, Mount Florida, Battlefield, Langside which are all gathered together in a mile or two square with lots of parks around, lots of independent shops and good bus and train routes. They are about 2 miles from the city centre. Out of them all, I reckon Shawlands is probably the most popular because of its high street and proximity to Queens Park. If you check out train times you will find that many journeys are only 10-15 minutes and they may have trains every 15/20 minutes.

Avoid Govanhill - the highest crime rate in Glasgow and streets of slum housing. Not sure why you would target A & B council tax bands as obviously these are most likely to be in deprived areas (Govanhill 1 bed flat for example, is in the B council band I think).

Pollokshields is a mixed bag - on the one hand it has really handsome streets of detached houses and is closest to the city centre but as it has the highest concentration of Asians, it doesn't have much in the way of flourishing pubs, and doesn't seem to have a high street as good as the previously mentioned southside places.

Wrong, you get what you pay for - it's expensive because it's so high in demand - fantastic sports amenities, brilliant parks, the only Waitrose in the city centre, it's on the tube line and major bus routes, great cinema, the best bars and restaurants. The southern side of the West end is in fact walking distance to the city.

one of my friends who was outpriced for the West End settled on Broomhill and highly recommends it.

With regards to Shawlands, it's definately in high demand in the rental market (and I expect it's the same in other areas) as I have several sets of friends looking around Shawlands and the surrounds.

They find that many of the properties they apply to see from adverts on the Gumtree and estate agent sites are already let and that agents are hosting multiple viewings - a single viewing where everyone interested in renting it is expected to turn up at the same time to look at it.

They are looking at traditional tenement flats because new builds, even 2 bed places in Cathcart, for example, are coming under band E for council tax.
