Absolutely not. Give an inch and they'll take a mile.

Even (as per my example) if you sold the car at full market value to your favourite neice - you wouldn't offer £100 as a one off goodwill gesture ?

It takes all sorts I suppose !! ................

    thanks
just been to see mechanic that did the mot and he said there was nothing wrong with the brakes and that there is no way all 4 pads and disks would need replacing!
he even phoned a main ford dealer who quoted £150,bit different to mr quickfit's £370!!!!

You need to delicately (if possible) but firmly explain that "new pads and disks" is a very well known money-spinner for several of the national chains from naive customers using the fear factor of "dodgy brakes".

You are absolutely NOT responsible for their naivety and, if they thought you should be paying for it, they should have let you know BEFORE the work was done so you could confirm the fault and check quotes. At very least they should have had the old parts returned so you could see them afterwards.

It sounds like a main dealer could have been cheaper, and may well have said there wasn't a problem in the first place.

However, if it was their favourite neice who they see every week, it was a £10k car sold for £10k and the repairs were £200 then I would be more inclined to offer them £100 to keep the family peace, but then re-iterate that this is a final contribution to any future repairs.

No. There is no moral issue at all involved if the new owner has fallen for a well known and, at least on the net, well documented case of pressure selling of repairs that weren't needed. I have some very stupid family members and their stupid actions are NOT my responsibility in any way, shape or form!

Unless shown otherwise (by seeing the parts) it's Kwik Fit who have wronged the owner, NOT the OP. How can he have any responsibility (moral or otherwise) for what THEY do?

I said what I would do in post 51, based on the OP (nothing to do with the issue of whether the purchaser has been ripped off).

We clearly have a different approach, however it is good to give different replies to threads and I stand by my earlier comment.

As I said, it takes all sorts ................

Main dealers are no better, the missus has just been to the dealership to get her engine noise sorted under warranty. They told her, her brakes were 95% worn (I find this VERY hard to believe) and her tyres needed replacing ASAP, strange as they were new tyres fitted less than 6 months ago and I only checked them over and put air into them last week..... They had at least 5mm of tread left.

She went for the brakes unfortunately (she said it saves ever having to do it in future), I'd like to have had chance to check them myself! But she was sensible enough to say no to tyres. I'll be checking to make sure they did actually change the brakes though......

I'm not going to make a fuss about it, or do a "told you so", it's her money..... But im annoyed by the dealership trying to take advantage.

True, but a main dealer who's told that Kwik Fit have said they need doing and you're doubtful because of the recent MOT are
quite likely to tell you the truth - bad press if they're the next ones on Watchdog ;)

OP states "brake related problem", but that could be anything from panicking at a bit of rust on the disc's, to complete failure....

OP suggests it may have been sat around for some time, so it's very remotely possible a calliper seized, that would give pretty spectacular results, the car would pull one way on acceleration and the opposite way under braking. BUT it's not a difficult fix for any mechanic that knows what he's doing..... You literally remove the wheel, remove the pads, (maybe undo the circlip around the seized pot), wack in a spot of WD40 and lever gently until free.

    Have done it myself :)

    I agree with the above.

It would also be interesting if the OP provided some further details - i.e. who was the family member, how much was the car sold for, what was the market value of the car, and how much were the repairs?

eg. if it was the car valued at £10k but was sold for £9k to a distant relative who they only see at weddings and funerals I would tell them that they need to cover the full costs themselves.

However, if it was their favourite neice who they see every week, it was a £10k car sold for £10k and the repairs were £200 then I would be more inclined to offer them £100 to keep the family peace, but then re-iterate that this is a final contribution to any future repairs.

car was worth approx £3500, sold for £3200 to brothers partner. very low mileage for diesel car, rarely driven due to medical issues, fully upkept (taken for run by myself, MOT's done, work carried out on airbag sensor, new tyre etc)
Main ford dealer quoted £150 IF (mechanic who did MOT says very doubtful) all pads NEEDED replacing, kwik fit charged nearly £400.
