As mentioned on other threads "your brakes are worn" is a perfect way of scaring people into having work done that they don't need. If your relatives want to fall for that then that's their choice, but it's certainly not your responsibility to foot the bill!
I don't suppose the garage has returned the parts the replaced? Might be interesting to see what condition they were in. My bet would be disks with either light scoring or a little bit of a wear lip - neither of which are an MOT or safety issue!
She took car to kwik fit who replaced ALL break disc AND pads, but it passed MOT in Dec?? Im bit confused, and she still not letting it go!! :mad:0 -

The fact it passed it's MOT is really irrelevant UNTIL you mention Kwik Fit in the same sentence........ooops!0 -

No we haven't seen any brake pads or discs that were changed, she went to kwik fit too.....bet they were rubbing their hands with glee!0 -
Kwik Fit.
They were probably taken for a ride.
You'll have to tactfully explain that's what happens when they believe a complete stranger in a garage, rather than trust a family member who sold them a car in good working order, and if they simply want to do ahead and get things repaired before talking to you, that's their choice.
But I wouldn't feel bad about it anymore.0 -
Brake pad and discs are consumable items requiring replacing every so often during the cars life. You take the risk of needing them replacing when buying any 2nd hand car (depending on mileage).
I don't think she has a right to complain.0 -

thanks
just been to see mechanic that did the mot and he said there was nothing wrong with the brakes and that there is no way all 4 pads and disks would need replacing!
he even phoned a main ford dealer who quoted £150,bit different to mr quickfit's £370!!!!0 -
she's been ripped off.... but you didn't do it.
Point her inthe direction of your MOT man and tell her to take it up with Kwik fit.
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

I agree with the above.
It would also be interesting if the OP provided some further details - i.e. who was the family member, how much was the car sold for, what was the market value of the car, and how much were the repairs?
eg. if it was the car valued at £10k but was sold for £9k to a distant relative who they only see at weddings and funerals I would tell them that they need to cover the full costs themselves.
However, if it was their favourite neice who they see every week, it was a £10k car sold for £10k and the repairs were £200 then I would be more inclined to offer them £100 to keep the family peace, but then re-iterate that this is a final contribution to any future repairs.0 -

Absolutely not. Give an inch and they'll take a mile. It has already been established that there was nothing wrong with the car and the new owner was ripped off by Krap Fitt. This has nothing to do with the seller and it's about time they were told to jog on and do one.0
