    OP I would hope you have parked it up on a level surface leaving it in gear, or you might find the cable the least of your troubles ;)

    Hi just found this post from on Wiki,describing fitting a cable to an an older fiat punto.might provide insight into the job;

    I have just changed the two handbrake cables on the back of a 1995 Fiat Punto and couldn't not have done this using the instructions in the Hayes manual. I seriously doubt if anybody can remove these cables from older vehicles, by only accessing the end of the cable that connects to the brake shoe, through the access bung on the back of the brake drum assembly. I had to remove the brake drum and remove the brake shoes. I then cut through the old cable and had to use a heafty thump to remove the cable grommets from the back of each brake drum. The other end of the cable is accessed from under the handbrake shroud. You remove both the left and right cable nipples from the beam attached to the back of the handbrake lever. The cables can then be removed from under the car but ONLY after you have removed the two litle "C" washers that fit into the grove on the cable grommet. Fiddly job but it can be done. My only problem now if getting the handbrake adjusted as I think the spring loaded mechanism on the back of the brake shoes has not "self adjusted" out so the calbe movement is not sufficient to activate the brake shoe sufficiently enough to apply the brakes. That's the next job for this week end!!!

    The minimum wage is £6 an hour,hope this helps you make an informed decision.

    Sounds suspiciously cheap to me - there's no way you'd get this job done for that much round here, not even at the dodgiest of back street garages.

    He said that part was £24 (but who knows if he is being honest)...so i think £40 is OK.
    You claim he said the part was £24, but who knows if you're telling the truth? ...

    It sounds pretty average around here and NOT suspiciously average, would suggest you go further afield for such a service where your less likely to be overcharged on such a basic job.

    Sounds cheap to me. I had to do one last year on my car and the cable (one side) cost £25, then it took me nearly three hours to fit.
    The driver's seat had to come out, the centre console taken apart and numerous other fiddly jobs before you could get to the cable end.

    On my old Peugeot 106 (was followed by a 306), the handbrake made a sudden loud bang when I was applying it, the lever would then rise nearly vertical, turned out it'd come unhooked on just the one side.... They're typically like a Y ot T shape, with the two prongs as it were going to a wheel each... Then the end of each is hooked onto the brake assembly much like the end of a brake cable on a bicycle.

    Hi guys,
    my handbrake cable snapped and i am booked in to get it replaced tomorrow morning.
    I have been quoted £40-£45 for the actual part, fitting and labour etc.
    Would you say this is a reasonable price?
    I dont want the garage taking the micky just because i am female!
    considering that its only a length of cable with 3/4 connections 45 squid is fine part is something like 15-20ish
