Hi guys,
my handbrake cable snapped and i am booked in to get it replaced tomorrow morning.
I have been quoted £40-£45 for the actual part, fitting and labour etc.
Would you say this is a reasonable price?
I dont want the garage taking the micky just because i am female!

Yes that's a ok price, and should only take an hour or so to fit

Sounds positively cheap, I replced my own one last year the parts alone cost me about £25 but I replaced the whole cable assembly and your guy might be only replacing a small bit that broke leaving the other side to break next year.

Perhaps you can name your car.

Thats doesnt sound too outrageous - £20 for the part and the rest for labour.

I mean for example, on my car (no idea about punto) there are 2 bits either side that cost me £5 each so if your car is the same he could be charging you £40 for labour for one wheel. Which is going to be at the top end of "cheap" these days i.e. you could easily do worse, you might find cheaper but I don't think you would easily find it cheaper.

A simple question I would ask him is "Are you changing the cable on both rear wheels?"

I paid about £70 last year at a main Ford dealer. So if you are going to an independent garage, that sounds about right.

    Thanks for the advice.

He said that part was £24 (but who knows if he is being honest)...so i think £40 is OK.

i would love it that you were bringing this car to me in the morning because even though hes doing it for basically nothing and he must be mad you are basically calling him a thief and untrustworthy
if i was he i would take your wheels off and go on holiday

    unbelievable

It sounds like a pretty fair deal. Obviously it would be cheaper to install one yourself, but if you dont know what your doing, the extra for labour is reasonable and worth it for peace of mind.
