On the plus side, bundance, you seem to be doing a good job of expressing yourself on this forum. So, i expect that things aren't as bad as you feel.

On the mortgage rescue scheme - there's this reference http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/HomeAndCommunity/BuyingAndSellingYourHome/Mortgagesandrepossessions/DG_174005

It does not sound like DWP are the people to talk to on this one, but there are so many schemes.....
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

bundance -if you did lose your benefits, do you have a spare bedroom in your flat?

If yes, could you cope with a lodger? You can bring in up to £4250 pa tax free under the Rent a Room Allowance. Some lodgers only want midweek which would give you a break at the weekends

    would suggest the same thing

Moving house every six months would certainly NOT be recommended by the tranquiliser support groups I use.

    :naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty: Now, now, you're being negative again :naughty::naughty::naughty::naughty:. ;).

What makes you think you would be moving every six months? If I had a flat to let and found a tenant like you, looking for somewhere long term. on your own and able to pay your rent indefinitely before going on to HB, I'd be punching the air and shouting 'this one's a keeper'.

Seriously, landlords are all looking for long term tenants so they have no voids - no-one would be looking to get rid of you after 6 months (unless your health improves so much there are wild parties every night ;)).

I'm sorry this is all making you worse - I suppose the upside is you are more likely to keep your benefits :(.

Thanks for the link, I have read it and it sounds like it would be something for me to look into, if needed, provided I met their eligibility criteria.

It's much easier to express oneself in writing than face to face or on the telephone.

Thanks for the rent a room/lodger suggestions, from you and the others on this thead.
I'm the sort who needs to live alone, though, because of psychological problems, living with someone else stresses me too much.

Thanks for the nice post gallygirl

I would only be able to pay rent indefinitely if I got housing benefit as my pension alone would pay rent, but I would not be able to afford to feed myself or pay household bills.

Even the proceeds of any house sale I had would not last that long.

Although I am not well enough to earn my own money in any way, I am trying to remind myself that I may not have this unwanted decision forced on me.

The medicals are basically a lottery, given the random way some people get market fit for work and others, unfit.
It doesn't seem to go by how much the individuals' ability to work if prevented.

I'm trying not to waste time worrying as that will make everything worse.

I set my mortgage rate fixed in 2006 for 10yrs at 5.18%.
I regret this decision now, and feel a bit of a fool, like I am the only one who is being ripped off.
If I hadnt have done this I would not be in this difficult position now, because my payments would have been a bit less.

Although I feel a fool, I am trying not to be hard on myself and have an attitude of 'what's done is done' and I cannot change it (its locked in)

You would be able to pay the rent and live on the equity from your house until you got below the level for benefits - then you would qualify for HB etc.

Hope you're feeling a little less in despair :)

O.K so clearly you are not in the right place to be making any major decision right now. Your best bet is to try not to worry too much (easier said than done), try and eat healthily, get sleep and try and do things that make you feel better/take your mind off things.
The volunteering/ job thing can wait until you are feeling better -in fact most things can wait until you are feeling a little better.
Just try and do one or 2 small positive things a day.
It is a stressful time but hang on in there.

Try and keep the points I have highlighted in mind. It's good to try and stay as positive as possible.
