It may do in the end by some insurers refusing to offer him insurance or only offering insurance at an inflated price.

Even if you have a non-fault accident some insurers ask the cost of your claim.

    True true.

I believe if you want a hire car then the fault parties Insurance should have the first chance to provide it at reasonable costs. Credit hire only give you the same service but just wack a HUGE amount on top for the 'service' they provide.

Even like for like would of been a HELL of a lot cheaper via the TPI.

yep, but the only reason credit hire exists is because TP insurers resist or refuse to provide an equivalent vehicle.

If at fault insurers were proactive and properly looked after the innocent party then credit hire would disappear overnight

Some Insurers do have teams that do exactly what you've said and provide hire but it's about getting to the Third Party before a credit hire company does. Personally, if a third party Insurer makes an offer to provide hire on the same terms as a credit hire company the third party should be obligated to use the TPI imo... A lot of the battle with credit hire is 'Who gets to the client first'. The GTA rates are vastly inflated over what an Insurer can actually source a vehicle at and I've known in the past (not naming names) but third party credit hire companies saying they're APPROVED by the fault parties insurance company and are the recommended source for third party hire vehicles.

yep, and it seems entirely fair to me that those companies that don't have such departments and leave it to the innocent party to make all the running in the hope of saving money end up paying credit hire rates

Isn't that already the case? I thought I'd seen case law to the effect that if credit hire is £150 and the TP offer a similar car and tell the innocent party the cost is £100 then if the innocent party continues to use credit hire the duty to mitigate costs is breached and the credit hire fees will not be recoverable

I think the way I meant to word it was... you should have to go to the TPI first for a hire vehicle and if they cannot do anything then you are free to approach the credit hire company as you've given the TPI chance to provide hire but yes you are correct. I used to contact third parties who were in credit hire/going into it and make them aware what I could source an identical vehicle for... Had some fun conversations with credit hire companies!

IMO as long as the company provide me with something suitable, I don’t see reason to moan.

I smashed an ’07’ S-Max a few years back, and ended up driving a Fiesta 1.25 for a week. My business partner smacked a 4 week old (57) Galaxy about 2 weeks afterwards and ended up in a Megane DCi. We both have kids and both need to work, living a considerable distance from the office (myself about 140mi round trip, him about 80mi). They both had 5 doors and it kept us on the road, so we didn’t really care.

I think we are in broad agreement but where we differ is in who does the running about, you think the injured party should have to chase the TP company, I'd say it should be the other way round and the TP company should pro-actively making the process as hassle free as possible for the innocent party

Last time I checked the longer you hire a car out for and if you book it in advance over the internet the cheaper it is.

So book your Corsa for 14 days or over a weekend giving some notice, then the rate should go down.

Also I found with some car rental companies if you ask for a car of your choice in a category it can be cheaper than what they give you as standard.
