At the moment could someone stay on JSA for 4 years?

My other half works in a shop, she was talking to a person yesterday and explained my situation about being out of work, the other person said her husband had been out of work 4 years, Like me can't even find anything to apply for.

I was also talking to a friend last night who tells me his brother will also be out of work 4 years now shortly.

4 years is a hell of along time, I mean do you think these people aren't doing enough? Or perhaps you get to the point where you say f*ck it and just give up. Its worrying as I am heading along the same path.

  • I think you can stay on it indefinatley if you cant get work!.
4 years is a depressing thought- but believable! I know two men one in his 40s and that other in his 50s who have been unemployed for years. They dont sign on though- their wifes support them and they look after the children.
I think the thing is to keep busy and active, nobody has made any nasty or negative comment about not having a job yet! I think most people know how bad the situation is.

  • God what a thought!
When I once went to sign on I said i was looking for work etc and that I didnt think anyone would actually not want a job and to be on JSA!.The woman looked at me and said there are people like that who come here!.Her eyes narrowed and she said and we know who they are!
    Well thats not me!
I also know a fair amount of people who have moved onto sick ESA instead of JSA.

All you can do is apply for anything and everything you see advertised.
  • Yes but there is hardly anything,In last nights evening paper- there were 2.5 pages of jobs and this is for a massive city. Each job has hundreds of applicants-its really bad.

I live in a fairly small area, but the local paper used to have 2-3 pages of jobs, now it has a quarter of a page with jobs for NHS support Nurses and a big RED be your own driving instructor advert, bloody useless and on the rare occasion there is something you could apply for like you say every man and his dogs in for it.
  • Its absolutley stupid, there will be millions of people who are going to be sat on the dole forever and a day at this rate.Where I am its competative even to get voluntary work and some places have waiting lists etc.
Loads of young people are never going to get a job at this rate and if they end up at 30 ish with no job history at all they will struggle for anyone to take them on.

If you've never worked you won't know what its like, you'll get used to doing nothing and you'll get to a point where you won't want to work, the same I guess is probably true even if you have worked, When I lost my job I searched furiously for the first month now its down to once a day and even at that there's still damn all, I bet it gets to a stage where people just give up.
  • My boyfriend’s brother has been mostly on JSA since he was 18 and he is now40!!! Some people just don't want to work. I've been on it for 6 months, hadf our interviews and have now been offered a job, persistence does pay off eventually.

Id get myself a board and somehow put on it that your looking for work and stand on a busy roundabout or main road, some guy did it somewhere and he managed to get a job.

Ive been on jsa myself so i know what its like, was on it for 5/6 months and hated it and not sure if i could have managed a year.
