Microsoft fishy sales woman...

Hi, folks have a new laptop and rang Microsoft today to help install their office software(thanks for the help on here they tried but it wasn't working for them), anyway it was installed fine and a few hours later a woman from Microsoft rang them back with urgent news of a trojan on their laptop. My Dad allowed them access while she was on the phone apparently, she said she found 116 hackers on their laptop trying to get their details and that they should run the start button and type the config code to bring a list of programmes up. And the fact some say running and some say stopped mean that eventually their laptop will die. She also said that the avast software I installed on it stopped the trojan, so I questioned my folks "how can it have stopped the trojan but it is still killing your new laptop?" Bless them, anyway long story short Microsoft woman kindly offers to fix their new laptop for about £100 as they NEED these three items before it dies a slow death.
1.system optimiser
2.system protector
3.email back-up
Is this all a load of old rubbish or what? My Mum rang up panicking that their new laptop was ruined all from an email that Microsoft sent them(the lady says it was this email specifically).
I have run msconfig on my laptop and some programmes are running some are stopped, my g/f's is the same ours are working fine.
Anything they need to do?
Also any spyware destroyers I can add to our anti virus stuff please?

I don't think you need to come on here to confirm common-sense and some muppet in Timbuktu trying to scam someone....

It was for their peace of mind, my Dad is adament that she was the woman my Mum spoke to earlier today but I have a feeling he told her before she knew and thought she was on to a winner.
Meh, thanks anyway they are still unsure I am right even after I have wrote this :rotfl:

Unfortunately in my parents case...very. But never enough to hand out details on the phone, she was a bit mardy to apparently when he refused which made him nervous that the laptop was going to die LOL.
They are in their 60's though.

I would be more concerned about the malware that 'Microsoft' have already installed on the machine when they allowed remote access.
Common sense does not automatically cease to apply when you turn 60...
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Mutter, mutter, young 'uns today, mutter, no respect, mutter, DR-DOS, mutter, new-fangled windows... :)

Back on topic, It won't hurt to download, update and run Malwarebytes free. A quick scan should find any nasties. More details in post 2 here.
