Microsoft fishy sales woman...

A virus scan and spyware scan should be fine but heck can we just refer to previous threads before the inevitable posts about how the pc is now totally infected with numerous back doors, spambots, zombiebots, autobots, keyloggers, spyware, viruses, vulnerable to all attacks etc etc etc and only a reformat, reload, destroy with fire is the only total way to be sure imminent death to all concerned won't occur again
These scam callers don't ever appear to do anything other than get MSConfig on the screen and getting the mug, I mean user to use LogMeIn and let them move the mouse around the screen to make it look like they're fixing problems. There's been no suggestion anywhere that anything like malware is being put onto a machine. Of course some scans will prove this and should be done.
Now I've got to go and speak to a nice Indian who's just called to say my computer is infecting the rest of the world.
Never trust information given by strangers on internet forums0 -
It's all about confidence in the machine and what it's used for. Whether they've installed something & changed settings to allow backdoor/remote access again or not - Would most normal users be confident banking on a machine that some scam artist has had remote access too?
For some, for piece of mind & to be able to fully trust the machine again, the best option is to wipe the drive & reinstall windows.

a few things.
0. your correct in thinking RUBBISH.
if the woman sounded indian then she is infact one of the many "fake" microsoft people cold calling trying to worry people who dont know.
1 you said your dad allowed her access I hope he doesnt do any online banking and she has probably stolen his password and log on information, so he should go to the bank and double check his account and make sure no withdraws have been made.
2 microsoft DONT phone customers ever, if they say they are microsoft / windows put the phone DOWN and ignore them
3 you dont need any of the software you mentioned.
4. the following she said she found 116 hackers on their laptop. hackers are the people who hack, and there wouldnt be 116 on 1 laptop at the same time, unless of course she has 115 people on there as she was helping her.
5. she also said avast caught the trojan, therefore it wouldnt be running, and it would have been quantined.
what would i do. 1. remove all the personal data from the laptop to a flash drive, its a new computer, so shouldnt be much on there like pics, docs, music.
2. to a full system reinstall using the F10 or F11 key at bootup, should be in the manual how to do a factory restore, then before turning on the wireless reinstall avast first.
and last download and install malwarebytes free http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free will take you to cnet to download the actual file.
or you could download from any other decent download site like http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
the difference between free and pro, is small, 1 you have to manually update the free version whereas pro is automatic, and 2. Real-Time Active Malware Prevention Engine Blocks Known Threats, whereas free, you have to scan.
works with all antivirus programs.0
