Joking aside though,I never realised that devimat electric underfloor heating was sooooooo expensive to run
Most Non Economy 7 Electric Heating is expensive to run!. Most Electricity in the UK is generated using other forms of fossil fuel, such as gas, which has to be purchased first in order to generate Electricity, and of course both the Gas supplier and the Electricity Generating company want to make profits from the sale.

Electricity prices are around 10p - 12p, Gas prices are 3.7p - 4p per KW/H which of course is why despite the constant price hikes, Gas is often the cheapest form of heating :)

You probably would have been better having a 'wet' underfloor system fitted, which is basically pipes which are fed from your GCH system. Hindsite is a wonderful thing, assuming it wasn't already in there when you moved in.
You could put a 15 minute timer switch on the wall so you press the button as you are about to have a shower then after 15 minutes the underfloor heating automatically turns itself
If you were using heating Elements from Thunderbird 2 perhaps, most normal underfloor heating systems would not heat itself, and conduct the heat through tiles and laying foundation in just 15 minutes of use!. I imagine part of the reason why the OP simply left it running was due to how long the system took to get to a decent operating temperature.
Tiles were cold though when I came out the shower  this morning
A second 'left dry' bathmat tends to work wonders to step onto. Get the type with suction grips on the bottom and you wont have to merrily skate around the tiles when you step on it!. Far cheaper than the UF heating.

Original poster back on.From over 30kwh a day to less than 10kwh these days :j

Incredible today with the superb weather and my solar panels.Read the meter at 8000 prior to taking the kids to school.Came home,3 washings ,dishwasher and a roast in the oven for two hours.........and by 1800hrs had used a mighty 1kwh.

Changed days indeed,I'm even getting used to the cold tiles in the ensuite :D

Thats an impressive decrease in usage.

My grandparents have their dining room with underfloor heating and the rooms huge, id hate to know what their bill is like...

  • I live in a 2 bedroomed house with my husband we have no underfloor heating and just the usual appliances, dishwasher (small) used every other day washing machine used avergae 3 times per week, laptop is on standby and we have 1 TV usually left on stand by as we have sky box. Our KWH have doubled on all this years bills so far, when compared to last years, when i complare last years to the previous years they are on a par, so any suggestions please . I have monitored our usage and we have been using around 15 kw per day and we are at work during the week. Scottish power say I will be charged quite a lot of money if they check our meter and it is found to be correct, I just do not undersatnd the reason for the KWH doubled. We have purchased a tumble drier, but this has not been used for the last 3 months and this recent bill shows doubled usage?

At 10kw, it would still only cost about 30p for a 15 min shower.
What do you mean "only" 30p? That's well over £400 per year even before you start to add in showers before bed or over summer.

    Have I missed something?

    30p x 365 = £109.50

I thought there were at least four of them (kids, plural, and wife). Then again that's the original OP not the threadjacker.

I think it's 3300kwh for electricity but then averages are fairly meaningless IMHO...

11,000? Never mind - according to my bill i have used 85,000 kwh in one month!
I agree with others, perhaps get a meter to see where you are using it most?
