Don't know why but I'm getting really fed up with people using the word 'mom' instead of 'mum', 'mam' or 'ma' etc - this isn't the US so why the americanism?

There really are only small region's in the UK where saying 'mum' sounds like 'mom' - so why use it?

The number of usernames on here springing up usng it, such as 'xxxx's mom' is getting me annoyed as well.

Yes, there are greater worries in the world but I just wanted to vent anyway.

As you are being picky..... it's 'regions' not 'region's'.

Here it's maw, mam, ma, mum, mither, Never mom.

As for the hon, it's hon for honey not hun for Atilla.

    My 2 cents worth :)

But really, is it worth getting annoyed over?

Glad I'm not the only one! Hon instead of hun also really irks me.

    Hon = short for honey.
Hun = either a made-up word taken from Winnie the Pooh or something to do with Attilla.
    :)
  • I'm from Staffordshire, with roots from the Black Country, and I use the word Mom. I get fed up of people complaining about me using the word Mom! I wouldn't dare to say anything to others that choose to use Mum, Mam, etc. It's all about where you're from, and in my case the dialect I speak.

No, it's MOM, not MUM! It's short for MOther, so it's MOM. :)

Also, this was debated a while back :)

I agree with almost everyone here:
Mom is perfectly respectable UK English - the fact that Americans tend to use it too doesn't negate the fact that it originated here (as in fact did most 'Americanisms') and is particularly common in the midlands.
'Hon' is closer to the term it is short for than 'Hun' but either tends to come across as incredibly patronising when used towards strangers on a forum.
Neither is worth getting worked up about, and I consider myself quite the language pedant!

But as far as my children are concerned they call me (and pronounce it) Mummy Not Mommy so the short form for us is Mum. ;) DH is from the Black Country so I am used to both. There again he says Bath & we say Barth. :rotfl:
