Trafford is great and Sale is lovely - been here 6 years and I have great neighbours, loads of shops, good food etc. Sale Moor and Tipperley are a bit cheaper than the main town but also have lovely centres and the tram.
Check out the new tram route - runs through Sale Moor village towards Withy to finally to the airport. Before there was only the bus so those areas might go up with better transport links.0 -
South Manchester would fit the bill but is likely to be fairly expensive.
In terms of North Manchester, a couple of small places that might be worth looking at are Littleborough and Smithy Bridge. Both at the foot of the Pennines so semi-rural but have plenty of pubs and restaurants around. Also, they are on the Leeds to Manchester railway line so you can be in the centre of Manchester in 25 minutes. Driving into Manchester would take about 45 minutes.

And I second this one:T:)"If ever there is a tomorrow when we're not together... there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we're apart... I'll always be with you. "

Get yourself on a train for the day and come out to Littleborough/Todmorden/Hebden Bridge to check out the area. I commute from that area and it's 40mins tops into Manchester Victoria with a plethora of trains at rush hour. Wouldn't have it any other way.0

I second prev post as I am from that location!
Also lived in south manchester, was going to suggest Heaton Moor, but unlikely on the budget, I would concentrate on North with good train links.0 -
One of the biggest issues with Manchester is that it is a huge connurbation. You say you don't want to be too far from the centre but still be semi-rural. Those types of locations are either very expensive or deprived. You can get cheaper the further you out but commuting times increase significantly.
Your best bet is to move into rented accommodation for 6 months and just spend your weekends exploring to find somewhere YOU like. The problem with threads like this is that people's opinions are very personal and I've no doubt if this thread remains live long enough, near enough every suburb around Manchester will get recommended by someone.0 -
Although manchester is one urban area from Handforth in the south to Bury in the north, Ashton to the east and salford/worsley to the west, there are many patches of semi-rural spots in between.
e.g Woodhouses, near to failsworth - within 6 miles of manchester, yet within 5 miles of the pennines. Or Stalybridge outside Ashton; about 8/9 miles from city centre but only a few minutes from the hills.
Mossley/anywhere in Saddleworth/North Bury, other places between Stockport and Tameside like Romiley, Bredbury?
Have a look on Google Earth to get an idea of how urban the manchester area really is. :cool:0 -
Well, I have to say Bury don't I but if you drive then anywhere on the m66 route ie Rossendale. I was thinking Chorlton, Sale, Altrincham but they are more expensive. Ramsbottom is nice as is Holcombe Brook. Lot of nice places but you need to see them for yourselves so agree with above, maybe rent for 6 months and get a feel for where you would like to settle.0
