Giving up Money for Lent

Hi
For things that you really think need replacing - like the vac that died etc why not try 'free cycle' - it's amazing! Someone may have recommended this already as i ahven;t read all the threads (I'm trying to give up so much time on line too!) anyway google it and anything offered has to be free and you can get some good things or get rid of things too - I may be a money saver but I'm not into selling stuff - I'm embarrassed by it - so this is great

Can I join too please? I had already set myself a challenge to still have £400.00 left in my bank account tomorrow which is half way through the month.
And it looks like I will make it so I have been with you in spirit, if not in fact.
My worst day looks like being Sat as I have promised my son a trip to the cinema as I had to cancel a fortnight ago, and my Daughter wants to come too, and she is the best person to persuade me to spend money, I shall have to let her shop on her own.
Keep up the encouragement, thanks a lot

Of course, it's not too late, Lent lasts til the beginning of April and I've got a sneaky feeling that most of us will probably carry on somehow after that. I know I will!
Just one word of warningOnce you start posting, you'll get addicted
I desperately need to save some money and also pay off my debt at the same time - it's complicated but my OH works contracts, so need sum of money to tide us over between contracts first of all and then will concentrate on paying off debt in a big way. Unfortunately his contract ends mid April and nothing in sight at the moment and there hasn't been for the past six months! Not a good sign!
To cut my food bill to £50 a week, I only shop online to avoid impulse buys and find the delivery cost is really not a lot different to petrol or bus costs. Also, as OH and DD eat warm meals at work/school, we now eat sandwiches or home made soup in the evening, instead of full cooked meal with meat etc.
I'm not buying any clothes or toys or books, just the essentials I've budgeted for. Wish I could talk OH into giving up the fags tho!:mad:0 -

Nice to see someone is upbeat and positive about it!
I've realised that one thing I might need with the 40 days will be hair conditioner. Gonna be searching the internet for how to make some out of my kitchen cupboard, I've heard of oil, and even eggs. Just make sure you rinse with COLD water..........
the scrambled look is so last year!!!
Hi CAFCgirl, try using fabric conditioner for your hair, my old boss swore by it and said the ingredients were practically the same! Her hair looked very shiny ! I haven't checked the ingredients but might be worth a punt.;)0 -
Yay that's my training course over and I'm 15 quid up on the luncheon vouchers that they give you to buy lunch with as I didn't spend a single one of them
I have to say 3 days of travelling in and out of London was a lot harder than I thought it would be, so work is going to be a breeze.
Thanks to this challenge I've managed to get my misc spending within the budget I set for it at the beginning of the month, scary thing is, I managed to spend that within the first 3 weeks of this month, I'd have definately gone over if it wasn't for this.
Welcome to all the new people.
LondonDiva - I know what you mean about all those bargains. I have to resist looking at the grabbit now etc boards otherwise I'll get tempted.Debts: Mum £3923 0% APR0 -
No spend day for me. There was a low point around 7pm when I was really really tempted to go out and buy a bottle of wine, wrestled with my conscience, thought 'CAFCGirl says NO', reached for my purse anyway.... and then I found OH had already bought one. Hooray!
Tomorrow and Friday should be easy as I'm working at home so won't go to any shops.Total debt: 1 January 2007 £[strike]49,387.79[/strike] 1 January 2012 £[STRIKE]19,312.85[/STRIKE] 1 August 2012 £11,517.620 -
wow lots of new joiners ~ welcome
i just went through my toiletries drawer and i have far too much 40 items  the only things that i will need for at least 4 months is razsor blades and shampoo... i have now got them all listed and will cross them out as they make there way into the bathroom... oh and while i was doing that i have found £2.94 :rotfl: and i also sorted my xmas/birthday box and i have 42 items in that so i am hoping at xmas the savings money i am saving each month will not be needed at xmas... :T this has made my day0 -
This would be extremely tempting except for the fact that I havent even enough money for the essentials - this is not good
And with regards to hobbies, what if it exercise-like and has health benefits, can we therefore do that?
Sad to still be a student and in a position to not deal with debts0 -

Personally I think prescriptions should be allowed, afterall if it wasn't needed then you wouldn't be prescribed it.
The challenge as I understand it, is not to spend that unnecessary money that creaps up on us. Essentials and those things already in your budget are allowed. I think everyone has to decide for themselves what's essential, personally conditioner is essential to me otherwise my hair is a tangled mess, but to CAFCGirl it appears to be a luxury.Debts: Mum £3923 0% APR0
