So is it possible that the guy that told me this was right? When I updated the devise I noticed that I have to press that I agree to something when before I never?
Oh gosh I don't know what to think know. It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun0 -
That Guardian story has been somewhat twisted and exaggerated to get the story that the OP is concerned about.
Satnavs are not actually that accurate about speed, except in certain specific circumstances, and any data collected would not be admissible in court as the device is not type approved. The device will never get type approval because it's not accurate or reliable enough.
However in aggregate the data is useful and the errors cancel themselves out, giving you statistics that are actually pretty good. Android phones do similar data collection if you allow them to, and Google attempt to use it to calculate current speeds on any given road and give you better results.
The police could also use this data to detect speeding hotspots and then set up a proper camera, which is what happened in Holland. Tomtom got a lot of flak for this when the story broke because speed cameras really aren't popular with a lot of drivers. I doubt they'll be doing it again because they will lose more in sales than they will make in selling the data.0 -
TomTom have teamed up with Motaquote whereby the TomTom SatNav device is used to measure vehicle usage and how "safely" it is driven - so by that I imagine your premium will rise if you speed or drive aggressively and slower driving will be "rewarded".The man without a signature.0

Ever notice the speed difference between your car speedo and sat nav, noticed this over the weekend on a long drive - Had the car on cruise control with a digital speed reading of 70 ... but sat nav was reading 68!
I was surprised to find on a Google when i got home that the satnav would be accurate! The rules state an allowable car speedo tollerance of +/- 10% at 30 mph... Manufactures, for fear of the concequences I guess always duck slightly under... You would think in this digital age a car (Mercedes) would be able to give a near 100% accurate reading...
"Yes officer I was doing 30mph give or take 10%!"0 -

Ok I am just asking a question as one of the guys said it to me today in work and I wasn't sure if they were pulling my leg.
He said he heard soon Tom Tom will but using your speeding information and passing that information on so you will be getting speeding fines without the need for speed cameras.
I am a bit worried as my Tom Tom flashed red when I was coming home and I must have speeded a bit, can someone confirm if this is true
I know this sort of guy, big mouth, large vocabulary, probably laughs annoying at the slightest thing, but has noooooo brain.
Some years ago the govt was hinting at fitting GPS tracking devices to ALL new cars, the idea was to do away with speed camera's, connect to your GPS "black box" at MOT centre's, download your data and issue fines automatically, all at the same time.
They would of course have had to do away with the licence points else 95% of the population would lose their licence within 12 months.... Leaving just the doddery old farts and tractors on the roads.
Though if it get's "Mr/Mrs Constant 41mph" off the road, i'd be well impressed
If they get around the human rights issue they might be able to do this in future, BUT your Tom Tom is not spying on you and never will:rotfl:“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
