Tom Tom and speeding tickets.

Ok I am just asking a question as one of the guys said it to me today in work and I wasn't sure if they were pulling my leg.

He said he heard soon Tom Tom will but using your speeding information and passing that information on so you will be getting speeding fines without the need for speed cameras.

I am a bit worried as my Tom Tom flashed red when I was coming home and I must have speeded a bit, can someone confirm if this is true
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

    That'll kill sales overnight.
I don't think it would be good marketing if it was true.

Almost definately. Just as it will point a camera out through the windscreen so it can see your number plate and report that too and take a photo of you as the driver.

It will then hang out of the open boot to get a picture of the make and model too :D

Seriously, Tomtom isn't overly accurate for speed. Sure it can be used as a rough estimate but that would require every tomtom to be able to connect to the tomtom network (and that would require a guaranteed connection to the internet OR a mobile broadband connection and contract). Then it would require it to be permanently used in the same car..

As it is at the moment NO it won't happen. There are black box type recorders that are available (some insurers were offering insurance by the mile) but you'd have to be registered to use it and have it properly installed etc.

Stop worrying. As it is, no your tomtom is useless (unless the police get their hands on it, dismantle it, manage to read out any memory etc and even then they'd have to have cause - such as a road accident).

If however you have one of these new cars with it built into the dash.. well thats another story. Yes, potentially it could be used like that but it would (as mentioned) need a connection to the internet via 3G or GPRS or something and you'd be aware of it from the instructions / privacy documentation etc.

It's baloney (or even something less polite). How does your TomTom know that is fitted in your car and how does it know who is driving.
loose does not rhyme with choose but lose does and is the word you meant to write.

sat navs are "Flat earth" measuring devices, they can not allow for undulated distance so are not a calibrated form of speed measurement unless you are a boat or aircraft.

  • Who the hell would buy a Tom Tom if that was the case. Wouldn't they also have to be home office approved devices like speed guns before they could convict you, load of BS me thinks.

Your current sat nav device is unable to do this but no doubt, as the sales of portable sat nav is slowing, TomTom are working on integrated gps devices which are being suggested by various organisations to be installed in cars in the future.
