Hi , Just looking at the letters it is evident that we need to keep an exact record of what the salesperson says so that they don't backtrack later and we are left with a dirty deal. Can any readers tell me how to record the conversation and is it legal? Do we need to inform the salesperson that what they say is being recorded?

why not record, they record for "training purposes" so you should be legally entitled to. Be sure to ask the representative to state their name, the date and time of the conversation and the company they work for.
Be sure he/she gives you an order/number etc over the phone and that you make the call from a number that has itemised billing so you can prove you made the call to the number.
Sounds a bit OTT but its worth it if you think they might try and blag it.ummm...0 -
I'm pretty sure that you can't record someone on the phone without telling them what you are doing ...0

People do it all the time.
Say "just to tell you that i'm recording this call" whilst your on the phone, it usually spurs them on to help you a bit more.
My Nokia lets me begin a call and press the record button on the side (the one used for voice commands) and it records the call for upto 1 minute.
Not sure what other methods give good quality and time length. Smile, you only get one life, LIVE IT.0 -
you have to ask there permission, if you don`t then the recording is illegal and can not be used or if they don`t give their permission the recording has to be stopped if you refuse the call is more than likely to be ended.0

I don't think this is quite right. A recording is illegal if neither party konws about it (ie phone tapping).
You are within your rights to record a conversation for your own purposes, but IIRC you can only use the recording in court if you notified the other person at the time.
I may be out of date on this one. I think oftel has some guidance.
But if he is a sales person and he is telling you the truth, he should not have a problem with you recording him. If he does have a problem, that's a good reason to walk away.

Sorry guys,
If I am calling from a housephone, how can I record a telephonic conversation. I need the technical details ie what equipment is required etc.0 -
This is what I use. Not cheap but good. http://www.beststuff.co.uk/phonapart_telerecorder.htm
You can record whatever you wish. It is what you can do with it is the problem.
If it is just between you and who you have recorded that is O K.
But if it gets legal you must have informed the person you have recorded that you are doing it.
When I was having problems with N T L. I used to tell them I was recording the conversation and that in itself helped.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0
