  • Only the Bank and Stepchange can tell you the information you require. If the Bank are offsetting this will be detailed in your offer letter.
  • I have recently made a complaint to santander for mis sale of ppi on loan. They have sent an acknowledgement letter to me with a form asking for my bank details should my complain be upheld. Is this a good sign? Or do they do this as part of the course? Many thanks in advance.

It just saves time if you have the claim upheld, fingers crossed.
  • Help!

I have used a claims company to see if they could help us find any PPI on a mortgage we had with the Britannia Building Society way back in the 1980's. The claims company told me they could go back as far as 1988 and we had the mortgage at that time with the Britannia. I filled in all the necessary paperwork but at that time, unfortunately, we were unable to not find any mortgage account number or paperwork regarding the old account. Britannia Building did a search for the account but said they could not find any details of our account. Therefore, the claim was not successful. I have now located some very old paperwork with the Britannia Building Society mortgage account number on it. We definitely had the mortgage in 1988 but we redeemed it in June 1990. Could anyone advise us would this now be too long ago to persue a PPI claim? Thank you.

    1) Don't tell the PPI firm, get it in writing they are no longer acting for you or they will come after you for a cut of the fee
    2) You keep saying claim, I assume you mean complain - simply having MPPI doesn't mean you were miss-sold, it is a protection that could save your home hence so few complaints are upheld
    3) 1988 pre-dates the regulatory system by 17 years (it started in January 2005) so unless you got the mortgage and policy directly from the bank with the banks sales staff (as opposed to a broker) then your complaint would have to go to the person who sold it to you and pre-2005 they can dismiss the complaint anyway.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • Hi, I hope I am doing this right but my question is - can I claim the ppi on a live mortgage? I have £1220 owed from ppi linked loans on my live mortgage. The mortgage company say that if I accept it will be paid into the mortgage owing. I queried this but was told as mortgage still live it has to go into the mortgage debt?? Is this correct??
  • Thank you for your advice, very grateful:beer:

MPPI would be rare from 80s. It was a late 80s product with most and for building societies it would need to be after 1988.
Britannia Building did a search for the account but said they could not find any details of our account. Therefore, the claim was not successful.

Not surprising given how long ago it was.

    Did you have PPI?
Was it standalone or built into the mortgage? (the majority were standalone).
Did Britannia sell it or did a broker?
Was it monthly premium PPI or single premium?

  • Hi. First post and im not very financially minded so all this is very confusing. Basically ive had lots of store cards loans credit cards overdrafts and car finance over the years. Nearly all more than 10 years ago and i have no idea if i agreed to ppi to get them Also with having all this debt i ended up having to remortgage my house and enter into full and final settlement iva which completed in 2008. Will i still be able claim ppi. I have no account numbers or agreements. It all just seems so complicated that i contacted a claims company but looking on here everyone saying this is a big no no. I have 3 kids under 3 so i havent got alot of spare time for anything! Thanks in advance x

Only use a claims company if you have a lot of time on your hands and more money than you think you'll need.

If you believe you had PPI, write to the lender and ask. However, if you defaulted and didn't pay in full, any funds will be paid to the remaining balance.
