  • after some advice please. i only became financially savvy in the mid 1990's and never took out any ppi's on loans or credit cards. Before that, it is a different matter. i have a good memory of dates that I took out loans and had credit cards with ppi, a quick summary follows.
    Nov 1986 barclayloan, ppi taken.
    Jun 1988 Barclaycard ppi taken
Oct 1991 loan taken with the AA. loan taken out over the phone and told i had to have the insurance ( i remember the lady telling me !)
Jan 1992 Leeds Building society credit card. ppi taken.

my wife had a car loan with LLoyds Bank in March 1990. she had ppi.

in all the above cases both i and my wife didn't need ppi because of our secure jobs.

question. are these loans/cards too far back for me to claim ?
Barclays Bank, of which i am still a customer with and have the same account number have no records of any loan or anything at all on my account prior to 1996.
I will submit a claim as nothing ventured etc, but any views/advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's great that you have good memory for dates, but unless you have supporting documentary evidence for these old loans in your own archive it's doubtful anyone else will after two decades or more.

    You might be better sending a Subject Access Request (SAR) letter to these institutions prior to any complaint you might make. It costs £10 for each lender but will provide all details the Bank has kept on file for you for at least the last six years and (sometimes) more. There is a fine template letter here;

If the SARs return no useful information and you don't have documentation yourself, I'm afraid any complaint you might make would fail on that basis.

Anyway, see what they come back with...
  • Just made 2 claims to Barclays for loan ppi dating back to mid to late 90's. Came across paperwork in the loft and it clearly states on pre printed forms that the loans are made up of 2 parts, cash loan and ppi. There is no part on the paperwork which I have crossed or signed to say I chose to take ppi and the agreement just says I was made aware of the terms and conditions of the ppi (how to claim, what constituted a valid claim etc...) not that I had been asked or confirmed I either wanted, needed it or that it was optional. Also made 3 claims to citroen finance for ppi on car finance. Agreement on these has been completed by them with no signature from me, just a typed cross in the box and my name printed by them. Made to feel it was all part of the loan/finance package.hopefully these reasons for complaint are valid along with fact I would have been paid on the sick from work or received redundancy pay if made redundant, allowing me to pay the loan payments anyway. Fingers crossed.

If the car finance was sold prior to Janaury 2005 they can dsimiss your complaints because they weren't regulated.

Barclays have just upheld my claim from a loan in the 90's which I had no paperwork for. I was advised by the Barclays PPI
Helpline to contact the Barclays archive dept. which I did and they provided every account number(loan, credit cards mortgages, savingss) I've had with them since I started banking with them in the early 90's. I then put in my claim in July and they upheld this week. All good :) .
    Good luck

It certainly helps if you still bank with the same institution, kipto98 lists several institutions (not just Barclays) and so obviously isn't a current customer of all of them.

Only if you approached the Bank for the loan yourself. As -taff said, if you were sold the PPI and the loan was arranged by the car dealer then they won't have been regulated prior to January 2005.
  • Hi

I am in discussions with Barclay regarding PPI on my credit card. The last letter they sent me had a cheque attached for £7 and it says that they believe that they have resolved my PPI complaint.

Is it right? Are they not supposed to send me an offer to accept or reject before they send me a cheque?

Plus how they come up with £7?

Any one else experienced same with them? Any comments please.

    Thanks
