Ryanair Changing Flight details

Hi all,

Just received an email from Ryanair with detail of flight changes.
The original booking was for a Sunday to a Sunday, however they have now changed the flights to a Monday to Monday.
We have booked our accomodation and paid for it.
I am self employed and have now got the additional loss of one, maybe two days of work due to late arrival back to UK on the Monday night.

We have had no reason/details for the change from Ryanair.

Apart from cancelling, which isn't an option due to accomodation being already paid for, am I able to claim any compensation for the inconvienence ?
Or is this another Ryanair 'scam'

Any help or advice will be greatly received.

Cheers,
MAW

Not a 'scam' but unfortunately a schedule change. This is sadly one of the down sides of a DIY package. As you have found one part of the holiday you have created now does not match with another part of the holiday you have put together. Option wise, could you ask if the accommodation can be changed to the Monday so that it matches your Ryanair flights? Or, as Ryanair will refund your money given the change, is there another airline you could use that operates the same route?
  • You're lucky you got an email, last year Ryanair moved my flights without even telling me. I only happened to notice when I looked up whether prices had changed out of curiosity. They really are an airline to avoid if you can.

And you've not stopped moaning about it since ...

You formed a contract with Ryanair for flights on the Sunday-Sunday. Ryanair cannot now fulfill that contract so have offered you an alternative. If this alternative is not acceptable to you, they have offered a refund, which will restore you to the position you were in before you engaged in any contract with Ryanair.

Not a scam, just unfortunately they have changed their schedule. Ryanair have no obligation to any arrangement you may or may not have made outside the contract you formed with them. Unfortunately just one of the risks of DIY travel. And it could have happened with any airline, they all tweak scheudules and would only offer what Ryanair have in this circumtance.

Not exactly, most full-service airlines would re-route you at no extra charge with another carrier in their alliance. For example if you were booked on a Lufthansa flight from London-Athens via. Frankfurt, they would usually re-route you via. Vienna with Austrian Airlines or via. Zurich with Swiss.

This is true. BA did it to us the Christmas before last. We couldn't get a suitable alternative flight so we ended up driving. In the end it worked out better for us as all the planes were subsequently grounded because of the snow.

No it doesn't restore you "to the position you were in before".

Passengers make arrangements based on the flights they have already booked including accommodation and car hire and the like.

Ryanair's own website advertises and provides links for booking additional arrangements.

    Eu regulation EC 261/2004 http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:32004R0261:EN:HTML

says that airlines must offer the passenger a choice when flights are cancelled

    Article 8
    Right to reimbursement or re-routing
    1. Where reference is made to this Article, passengers shall be offered the choice between:
    (a) - reimbursement within seven days, by the means provided for in Article 7(3), of the full cost of the ticket at the price at which it was bought, for the part or parts of the journey not made, and for the part or parts already made if the flight is no longer serving any purpose in relation to the passenger's original travel plan, together with, when relevant,
    - a return flight to the first point of departure, at the earliest opportunity;
    (b) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at the earliest opportunity; or
    (c) re-routing, under comparable transport conditions, to their final destination at a later date at the passenger's convenience, subject to availability of seats.

It doesn't say re-routing must be on the operating air carrier's flights.
Passengers should be able to accept an offer of (b) re-routing, with no need to change accommodation or car hire.

Richardw - the above needs to be read in conjunction with the FULL EC Regulation 261/2004' particularly Article 5. The OP does not say when they are flying but I'd wager a pound to a penny that it is for more than 14 days time in which case Ryanair have given sufficient notice of the cancellation and your advise would not stand. Article 8 does not apply as notice has been given.

No, that is not correct. Article 8 applies even if 14 days notice has been given. The 14 days notice just absolves the airline from paying compensation in addition to the passenger's choice of a refund or re-routing.
