Just an update, I was refused my card because I lived in Glasgow and banked at the Glasgow Natwest branch. Today my account was transferred to the City of London branch to escape the move to Santander. I called the telephone banking team and asked again for a contactless card and this time I could get one because I had an account in London where they were trialling them, even though I still live in Glasgow.

Anyone can get one providing you hold a purple debit card and your not at a branch which is being sold to Santander...

They never explained the Santander part to me when I called previously. I was just told that I couldn't have one since they were only being trialled in London and I lived in Glasgow.

Do you know if there are actually many places that you can use a contactless card in Scotland? I'd like a card but I'm wondering if it's worth bothering with...

...didn't we all feel the same when Barclays bought out the first debit card (Connect???) in the '80's. Not many shops had terminals and we wrote cheques or did the credit card imprint thing on paper slips. Look where we are now!

I guess also that for some having a contactless card is an indication that they have a debit card that works offline. Personally I have only seen a few retailers that offer this but I bet a pound to a penny in 5 years or so it will be the norm.

I live in Glasgow, so I've found quite a few places that would take the cards. I currently have contactless on my barclaycard, but would prefer to use a debit card instead. I imagine though that there probably will be plenty of more places in London to use it than up here.

I agree, I feel the same way about people who choose accounts on the basis of the way the debit card looks as well.

What can I say? I use my debit card for pretty much everything. I like gadgety gimmicky things.

But also to add, I'm not getting the card to "prove my card is off line," I just want it for the quickness.

Erm, it wasn't so long ago you were complaining Barclays wouldn't give you a contactless card!

I got one from Natwest, and also have contactless on 2 of my credit cards and use them quite a bit, and when London buses start accepting them as payment instead of having to use an Oyster card, I'll use it even more
Debt free and staying that way!
