Old fuse box replacement

Hi all, i currently have an old type fuse box, type with the fuse wire in and had an electrician around to give me a price for straight swap of units. He checked the old wiring out and said its decent standard, all earthed and wot-not, so should`nt be any problems in replacement. He did warn me that with the new breakers, they are far more sensitive than my previous set-up, so i have to be prepared for maybe other works as this may show faults in certain wiring that is not a problem as yet? I`m prepared for this, he could easily not have told me this and fitted the unit,then dropped the you need extra works bombshell, fair play. He is providing the new unit and gave me a rough/top of his head quote of £300-ish, i am unsure if this is about right or can anyone say if this is expensive, i have no idea, also this is mates rate. Any advice/ info greatly appreciated, thanks.

    really, sounds expensive to me, the box is 60quid, and its a couple of hours work at best.

    240 pounds to fit it.. hardly mates rates.

    Oh get real - you've spouted this crap before haven't you! 2 hours job - in your bloody dreams pal.

    A realistic price for this "more complicated than bungle4by4 even has a clue about" job is around £350-450 depending on number of circuits,and any remedial works that might need doing (main earth bonds to gas & water for example). Thats typically what I charge here in Yorkshire for your average 3 bed semi & I've plenty of work (despite it taking more than 2 hours :cool: )

    If you look here then you get an idea of what people are actually paying for this work;

    im 17th edition spark mate, your just overcharging. You can rant all you like, we both know the truth. And if the simple job of a board swap takes you more than 2 hours, you are dragging you feet to pad the job. How much of that time is spent sat in your van reading the daily star...

    I'm with zak47 on this. Its a 300 - 350 job.

    You evidently have a common problem known as a 'vocal ringpiece'

    So am I, pal, a time served sparks of over 25 years in business! (which covers the 15th,16th and 17th Editions if we want to start pi$$ng up the wall!)

    The only thing we have in common, pal, is that we both drive Volvos. You sound like the typical cowboy that's giving the trade I've enjoyed for over 25 years a bad name. If you do it in two hours then you've done a !!!!!!, half-arsed job and you know it. 10 circuits, test before, test after & do it it all in 2 hours - get f***ng real!

    So you charge £120 for a CU change do you - you're a joke. :eek:

    Anyway, your posts suggest you're a motor mechanic, not a sparks, so I call you on that one, bullsh!tter!

    Lol, who's the cowboy, the bloke who does a real job, for real money.. or the pr1ck who takes all day to justify his rates...

    this is a mates rates job, and this is hardly mates rates is it... if you would like to see my qualifications your more than welcome to come and inspect... you may be a little surprised, but people can have more than one skill. If i wanted to be a domestic house basher i'd have to go and have half my brain smashed out with a hammer.

    handbags at dawn??

    anyhow back to the OP... this is about what I am paying for electrician to replace our box (tomorrow as it happens). I am in a 1950s ex-council house and the price reflects the level of checking he has to do as frankly there are quite a few bodge jobs on the ringmain which I would rather do than have another bodge job on top of all the others.
