Trousers with lifetime warranty - Button came off?

A popular brand of activity trousers, offers a "lifetime warranty" on an item i recently purchased.

After about 4hrs of wear, a button came loose on the trousers.

Am i right in assuming that i now need to chase this fault/repair up with the retailer, and not the company.?

Regards,

AO

No, you don't need to do either of those things.
It would actually be far quicker and more cost effective just to sew the button on again.

However, if you want to chase anyone, it really depends on the way you want to go and who is providing the lifetime warranty.

If you want to use the Sale of Goods Act for a remedy, it is the retailer you need to approach.
    How recent is 'recently'?
If over six months from purchase, you may need to prove that the thing is/was inherently faulty.

If you want to take advantage of the 'lifetime warranty' and that was supplied by the manufacturer, then you will probably need to chase the manufacturer.

There, in the time taken to write that you could've sewn the button back on.

Oh my good gawd. Get a needle and thread. Sew it back on.

    Thanks for the replies.

    The item was £20+.
The item was worn for 4hrs (from packaging opening / button coming off).

How much time will it take you to contact the manufacturer/ retailer, package them up and post them back?

How much time will it take to find some thread and sew the button back on?

It's not indicative of great manufacturing for sure. But buttons are easily sewn back on and that's by far the most sensible, not to mention quickest, solution. I expect you'll also find that buttons are exempt from the 'lifetime guarantee'.

So, guarantee or not, you'll just be a consumer standing in a shop saying 'Hello, the button fell off my trousers. What do I do?' much to the delight of the sales assistant who'll stand there thinking 'Have you thought about getting some 'how to live without dying' lessons?'. :D

I really would sew it back on, but forever more i would waiting for the day when my poor standard of sewing ensured that the button popped off.

My sewing is really bad, i really should create a "How do i sew a button on?" thread, but i wont. Instead i shall press the retails for the "lifetime warranty", as it was 4hrs not 4wks/4months/4years..

I recently had a button pop off a pair of jeans that I had only wore 3 times, I took them back to the store and got a refund. (would of swapped them but no more in my size.)

Mine had metal buttons and top part came off, hence couldn't be re-sewn but either way a button should say on more than four hours. I would return them to the shop and ask for a refund/exchange.

Or some baler twine, works very well I believe. Or some strawberry laces from the sweetie aisle they are deceptively strong when laced together.
