Broken iPhone screen

I have just dropped my iPhone 3GS onto my glass coffee table and the screen has seriously cracked, almost all shattered. I could cry!!!

I'm 12 months and 1 week into a 24 month contract so an upgrade isn't an option yet. I don't have mobile phone insurance. Nor do I have a bank account that would offer it.

What is my best plan of action?

The Apple store. How much would they charge for a new screen?

A local independent phone shop who do repairs.

Or claim on my house insurance?

I'm absolutely mortified! I've manage to be careful for a whole year! Can't believe I've done it!

Local repairer - check at least 2 for a quote and take the cheapest/fastest - preferably someone who is local and you do not have to post it. Insurance isn't always the answer, as you often pay an excess, and this may be more than the actual repair cost. Apple will certainly replace your phone, but you do not get the same phone back.

Thanks for that. Just noticed that the home button isn't working either :(

Don't particularly want to go down the insurance route as I'm trying to build up my no claims again after a break in a few years ago.

Will speak to the local mobile phone store and see what they can do.

Do an internet search, as the best repair resources have shops where you would least expect to find them! The High Street stores usually charge the most.
  • I had a balck to white iphone conversion done here;

    http://www.iphonerepairsltd.co.uk/about-best-iphone-repair-company/

That cost £150, so thats the max you would pay as mine included digitiser, front and back, home buttons etc.

They do a postal service, but i went down in person and it was done in less than an hour.

I've literally just done that! Found one that charges around £50-£60 (that's saying the only damage is the screen and home button) and they do most repairs in 24 hours and they always use special delivery. Just wary sending it to a company I've never heard of!

OH said I should take it back to Apple but won't that be expensive?

Apple will be very expensive in comparison.

Apple charge a fixed fee of £130 from my experience.

Just figured out it's not charging either. Must have damaged the port somehow.

OH has taken over and made an appointment at the Apple store tomorrow. He said they'll either repair it or replace it with a refurb for £130. I told him about the cheaper places but he said he'll take it to Apple and he'll pay (not gonna grumble at that!).

I can't connect it to iTunes to back up... will backing it up to iCloud work the same way?

  • Just to say, you could do it yourself. I am not good at DIY to be honest but i fixed it myself. Cost me £10.30 for a new glass, front and homebutton pack, and 10 minutes to change it following a youtube video. Good as new now. Just a thought.

Thanks, but I'm not technically minded in the slightest!
