Baggage handler/thief stole our cash on Easyjet flight

IMO I think it IS worth pointing out that what the OP did (albeit years ago) was incredibly foolish. Loads of people read these threads and (just like those who travel without adequate insurance) if it can prevent someone making the same mistake it's worth it.
Maybe it's different for a woman but although I'm aware that hand luggage can go in the hold on busy flights I wouldn't pack my money in a case even if it was going in the overhead locker. That goes in my handbag and that stays with me. The only time it's out of my sight is in the x ray machine. I also wear any jewellery I need as I'd be distressed if it went missing. After that if it's clothes or expensive toiletries, I wouldn't be happy but I'd get over it with the help of insurance.
You can usually only have one piece of hand luggage so it wouldn't be an option to have a separate handbag.0 -

I take a small rucksack and a money belt which holds passport and cash/credit cards. I have never been asked to put the rucksack in the hold.0 -
It is useful sometimes when old posts are "refreshed" as it alerts new people to potential problems they may not have known about otherwise. For example, I will be flying Easyjet Gatwick-Bologna in July and would obviously like to avoid the problems other people have had.
If we arrive very early for check-in will this help to avoid the possibility of being asked to put hand luggage in the hold or does the problem only arise once the plane is being loaded?
If you are asked to put your bag in the hold it seems that you are allowed to take out any valuables from it in advance. Are you allowed to have a separate bag pre-packed with your valuables inside the original bag which you can just take out or does this defeat the object for the airline of having less hand luggage?
Thanks for any help.
I have flown Gatwick to Bologna with Easyjet several times and haven't yet seen passengers having this problem. I do limit my hand luggage to a small soft rucksack which slides under the seat in front and a separate money belt .0 -

I always make sure that my handbag can fit inside my hand luggage if needed but I've very rarely (if ever) been asked to do that.
Like Kate said if I was asked to put my hand luggage in the hold then I'd retrieve my handbag. Not sure why you quoted me?
I was agreeing with you!!!!!!
I'm also a woman but don't do handbags.
I've never flown just hand luggage before, so this thread has made me think about what if.
I quoted you because I was surprised you would put all your valuables in your hand luggage. Now you explain you don't do handbags I can see why.
It doesn't have to be a handbag as such. It could be a small rucksack, tote or even a carrier bag. I invariably have a book, a newspaper, phone, water and some food with me on the plane anyway plus ticket, passport and other papers so it wouldn't be practical to juggle them all in my hands. . Some people wear special coats or cargo trousers to serve the same purpose.
I still fail to understand why anyone would want to be parted from their money, next to passport and tickets it's the thing most likely to mess up a holiday.0 -
You can be asked to check your hand luggage with any airline. If the airline only allows one piece make sure anything of value is already in separate bag inside that one piece, then all you need to do is lift it out. Value not only includes money, cards, passport, travel docs but also meds, ipads, tablets, kindles etc. If they go awol your insurance is unlikely to cover and as airlines tell you not to check anything of any value, they won't reimburse you either.
My money, cards etc stay on my person anyway, and if there is anything else of value in my hand luggage it is locked before it goes in the overhead locker. You can't always put your bag in the locker over your seat so anyone could have a rummage through it during the flight.0 -

Ah ok I am planning on using a small rucksack that can be used to carry bottles of water whilst sightseeing on holiday. I'll put all my valuables in there, and keep it inside my suitcase, so same as a hand bag I guess.
My husband carries our cash as I don't do purses either!!!!!!
If it doesn't fit in my jeans pockets on a normal day I don't take it.
Holidays are slightly different, I do use a small decathlon rucksack when away.0 -
Thanks, katejo, useful to know that you haven't seen any example of needing to put cabin luggage in hold on the Bologna route. We are going at the beginning of July so not sure how busy it will be so we will probably need to be prepared in any case.0

A report back to say that we were asked to check our hand luggage on the LGW to Bologna route. Thanks to this thread we were prepared and had put a soft bag inside with everything we needed for the flight. Took that out, handed over our 2 cases and it was great not to have to fight for overhead locker space. Turned out well so thanks for the heads-up.0

On a trip from Bristol to Bordeaux recentlya woman passenger was asked to put her hand carry luggage in the hold even though it was within regulation size for the cabin.
When she got into the cabin there was lots of room in the overhead lockers and she couldn't understand the request.
We couldn't either. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0
