It is useful sometimes when old posts are "refreshed" as it alerts new people to potential problems they may not have known about otherwise. For example, I will be flying Easyjet Gatwick-Bologna in July and would obviously like to avoid the problems other people have had.
If we arrive very early for check-in will this help to avoid the possibility of being asked to put hand luggage in the hold or does the problem only arise once the plane is being loaded?
If you are asked to put your bag in the hold it seems that you are allowed to take out any valuables from it in advance. Are you allowed to have a separate bag pre-packed with your valuables inside the original bag which you can just take out or does this defeat the object for the airline of having less hand luggage?
    Thanks for any help.

You can do what the heck you like with a bag inside a bag. My OH often has a bumbag with all our important stuff, money, tickets, etc shoved inside his rucksack which would be whipped out in these circumstances.

    I agree with claremac.
I'm glad this has been brought back to the top.

We don't fly very often but we are flying over Easter, and it's with easy jet. And we've never gone with just hand luggage previously, so wouldn't have even considered this had it not been mentioned.

So I've decided on a bag within a bag for my my cabin luggage, and I've warned OH too, so should any of the three of us (ds is going too) be asked to put stuff in hold we'll be prepared.

Regardless of how old the thread is, what sane person would put cash in their hold luggage ? Sorry but i had to say it.

Agreed I would never do that. BUT we're going hand luggage only so our cash and valuables will obviously be in them. IF we're asked to put our bags free of charge into the hold due to space restrictions then I don't know if I'd have stopped and thought on the spot about thieving especially if we're being hurried so the plane doesn't miss it's slot or something.

Now it's been mentioned its really obvious what we should do, but the thought hadn't crossed my mind previously. As I've never travelled hand luggage only.

They didn't put cash in their hold luggage, it was hand luggage which was shoved in the hold at the last minute, totally unexpected.
Wrong to leave it there, granted, but it wasn't put in hold luggage.

They don't grab your luggage off you at the last minute. They ask for volunteers to put their luggage in the hold and give you plenty of time to rearrange your belongings.

OP stood there and watched until they saw the bag being taken to the hold, they had plenty of time to take the money out of the case.

IMO I think it IS worth pointing out that what the OP did (albeit years ago) was incredibly foolish. Loads of people read these threads and (just like those who travel without adequate insurance) if it can prevent someone making the same mistake it's worth it.

Maybe it's different for a woman but although I'm aware that hand luggage can go in the hold on busy flights I wouldn't pack my money in a case even if it was going in the overhead locker. That goes in my handbag and that stays with me. The only time it's out of my sight is in the x ray machine. I also wear any jewellery I need as I'd be distressed if it went missing. After that if it's clothes or expensive toiletries, I wouldn't be happy but I'd get over it with the help of insurance.

Not sure why you quoted me?
    I was agreeing with you!!!!!!

I'm also a woman but don't do handbags.
I've never flown just hand luggage before, so this thread has made me think about what if.

I'll already be anxious so if they ask me at the bottom of the steps as they have done to others and hurry them along as others have mentioned they sometimes do. I will be prepared with a small back inside my main bag that I can just whip out.

This will also be useful during the flight as the main bag can go in the overhead and I'll keep my little bag with me, as it'll save me getting up and down annoying everyone to get my kindle etc
