Gardening in Yorkshire

I will have about 30 strawb plants to give away on sunday, dunno how this works, perhaps only postal?

I`m in west yorkshire

have you thought about putting them on freecycle? There's also a couple of sell it/swap it groups on facebook - there's one for Halifax I'm sure, also Tod/Hebden, Burnley....

I've got a few myself to get rid of, but I'm so tempted to throw them onto some scrub-land near our house so they can grow wild. Quite naughty.

Depending on where you live of course, could you pop them out front with a notice to help yourselves, or have you asked around friends, neighbours, lots of people are having a go at growing a bit of something and i'm sure would be very grateful.

You'd be surprised at how many people would quite happily take a few free strawbs off your hands! :D

There were about 45, woman next door took 15, left 15 each on the doorstep of two others.

Couldnt chuck the little darlings could I:)

BTW, though most of my strawbs are in sand and gravel, I did plant my mara des bois in soil thinking as the top variety they deserved the top medium I could offer.

They suffered almost complete slug wipeout. How disheartening it is to see a lucious looking berry, come to pick it and find its just skin, hollowed out by woodlice after the slugs have pierced the skin.

Im moving them to the sand and gravel, because my plants there suffered almost no slug strike, which is why I had the 45 surplus

I think the `slugs dont like gravel` theory may well be true

If walkers wont pick em, the birds, fieldmice etc, will

they will need digging in a bit though

Hello All,

Where abouts in West Yorkshire are you Cootambear? I would love to grow lots of fruit & vegetables in the garden but don't have much spare cash to get started or knowledge in what to do.

I did start from seeds a fortnight ago some things but so far not much seems to have started to grow.
