  • You sound like a great owner and your dogs have been very lucky to have you. Of course you still feel sad about your dog.

Time does ease things though. I still think about all my old pets at times and feel a bit sad even though many were a long time ago. But over time it becomes more about remembering the good times we had.

I know how you feel. I miss Sheba every day.

Mum got her from the RSPCA, she'd been abandoned as she was worthless. This massive GSD was shaking, skin and bone and flinched if you raised a voice. She grew in confidence - loved to eat snowballs, loved to snuggle with my baby niece and sleep.
I hd my breakdown and she got me through it. She'd lay by my closed door til I let her in, and she'd jump on the bed, steal it and sleep with me until I slept, even when I had bad dreams, she was there. When I got told she died, I couldn't speak, tears rolled down my face, and even now, I can remember it and want to cry.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself, I'm currently sat beside my 13 year old staffie who is literally living on borrowed time. He has lost virtually all the use of his back legs and over the weekend we have noticed his breathing has become rather laboured.

He is my OH's dog originally and they have seen each other through many dramas and I think the world of him (I will be sleeping on the sofa with him tonight). But he is 13 years old, has had a wonderful life in terms of a dog and i shall be extremely sorry to see him go. I don't think he has long left in this world and I know my OH will literally fall to pieces (he suffers with clinical depression anyway) and it will be up to me to hold it together so I don't think its wrong for you to still be grieving, our pets hold such fond places in our hearts and I think we should remember the good times. I try to do this everyday when I see him struggling.

God bless you for still grieving and I'm sure somewhere your dog is still looking down fondly at you for giving him a wonderful life x

How is the dog doing? Laboured breathing/panting can be a sign of
pain, and with the back legs going it is very likely the case.

I am sorry for your loss Scotsman - yes it is normal. It took my husband a long time to come to terms with the loss of our dog, who incedentally was my soulmate.

Loosing a pet can be devastating and the grief can grip you for a long time. I could not bare to see a picture of my dog for a good two years after he passed, it just hurt too much. :(
