Warranty complaint on my Television

Hello,

Around February last year I brought a Panasonic Plasma TV and also took an extended 5 year warranty out. The last couple of months I have had problems with the TV buzzing (apparently a common fault with Plasma TV’s). Engineers have come out 3 times and replaced parts but the buzzing is still there, so yesterday the TV has taken off for a soak test. The guy who picked the TV up says there is a good chance it will need replacing.

Have spoke to Comet via e-mail and they say if the TV is replaced, then my warranty will expire, is this fair? I paid for a 5 year warranty, it’s not my fault the if the TV needs replacing after a year. I assumed the warranty would just carry on for the new TV. Comet are saying 'This is in accordance with the terms of the policy and would be effective from the date of purchase' Just wondering if I have a case or if what they are saying is correct.

If they are correct, my worry is now including the warranty I would of paid £700 for a TV and if the replacement develops a fault then I am screwed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Then you shouldn't have claimed under the warranty within a year of purchase the extended warranty is not required.

If you have a copy of the T&C then simply read them and they will tell you what you agreed to at time of purchase.

But I can't help when the tv breaks - also if its a 5 year extended warranty, should that only kick in when the standard warranty ends?

You don't need to use, or even have, the extended warranty in the first year it is covered all-ready.

So I should of waited until the first years warranty expired and then took it out?

If that is the case, the person who sold me the tv should of said that to me surely?

No just when you phoned/called in to say your TV was broken not mention the extended warranty, hence not make a claim on it so it would continue.

It was a different number to call the extended warranty helpline.

This hasn't been explained very well to me when it was sold, much like PPI claims I have going on, it's been mis-sold.

Nothing was said at the time of purchase about replacements ending the warranty.

Know when they phone up I am gonna demand they fix the screen because at least that way I still get the warranty. Robbing (insert rude word here).

It must be in the Terms and Conditions that you were given.

Will check when I get home, thanks.
  • You say you bought it around February, have you checked when you actually bought it?

I am afraid that this is how insurance usually works, with car insurance if you write off your car and get a settlement the insurance usually ends there and then and there is no refund if you have paid upfront and outstanding payments are deducted from the settlement if you are paying monthly.

You have insured that particular TV so if there is a settlement the insurance ends.........simples !
